I roll around in my bed. It's Sunday and I've been staring at my ceiling for two hours. I'm bored.
I also keep wondering about how deep of shit I'm in for the wedding. Colton and I don't get along the best, but I did have fun with him yesterday. I kind of had a lot of fun.
I sigh and look at my phone. I groan into a pillow and then sit up. I walk over to my closet and get dressed. I brush my hair and my teeth and then walk downstairs. I sit down at the table and call Colton. "Hey," I say.
"Andy?" he asks.
"Yeah. You wanted to see a real heart, right? Well, if you still want to, meet me at Redbrook hospital in twenty minutes."
"Uh, yeah. Which entrance should I meet you at?"
"At the main entrance, I'll wait for you."
"Bye. But, be sure to wear something sexy."
"You're a piece of shit."
"See you later." He ends the call and I smile to myself slightly.
It's probably a terrible idea. But, I'm bored and Colton's always entertaining. Plus, as much as it pains me to admit it, he's nice to look at and he smells good. He's also an arrogant, no good piece of shit, manwhore. But, he's ripped, so it kind of evens out. I shake my head as I'm getting in my car and driving to the hospital.
I crack the window open slightly and the delicious scent of rain hits me. It always seems to be raining our town. It kind of like the town in Twilight, Forks, but a lot bigger and there's sadly, no sparkly Edward Cullens.
When I get to the hospital I walk into the intern room and change into my scrubs. I grab my phone and walk outside, waiting for Colton. His car pulls in and he gets out. He runs through the rain and I smirk.
"What's the matter? You don't wanna ruin your hair?" I ask him. He rolls his eyes.
"You should get out here. I bet you'd like sexy as hell wet," Colton says, his gaze drops from my face. I get the feeling he's not talking about rain or water.
"Jesus, why are you so obsessed with sex? Can't you be around me for like five minutes without saying something about my pussy or my tits?" Colton just smiles.
"Why are you in scrubs?" he asks.
"You'll find out later. You get a pair too, by the way," I say. I lead him to the intern locker room. Michaels is in there. "Hey Michaels," I say. She looks up.
"Oh, hey Andy," she says. She ties her hair back. "I get to scrub in on a appendectomy. Who's your friend?"
"No one. Good for you though," I say. She nods and walks out. Colton's just standing there awkwardly. I toss him some scrubs. "Change," I say.
"In here?" he asks warily.
"Yes. We don't have all day. And you certainly aren't shy," I say. He shrugs and takes off his shirt and. I see why he weighs two hundred and twenty pounds. Holy fucking shit. He has amazing abs and his arms are very well defined. He takes off his shoes and then his jeans and pulls on the scrub pants and then slips on the shirt and puts his shoes back on.
"When you said that I was going to see a real heart, you were actually serious, weren't you?" he asks.
"Yep. First a dead one and then a live one," I tell him. He swallows. "You're not getting out of this."
I take him down to the Morgue first. "Hey, Mom. This is Colton, my lab partner. He was curious about why a real heart looks like," I tell her. She smiles at Colton and he looks at me.
"Perfect timing I was just about to open this guy up," she says. I walk to her side and Colton follows me. She does the standard cuts and then pulls the skin away. She uses a bone saw to open the rib cage. As soon as Colton sees the inside he hurls into a trash can.
I laugh silently to myself. I wash my hands and put on a pair of gloves "May I?" I ask Mom. She nods. Colton looks at me as I start to take the heart out of the chest. It takes a couple of seconds for me disconnect it from everything.
I cup the heart in my hands and take a step towards Colton. His hand is pressed to his mouth. "Do you want to hold it?" I ask him. He shakes his head fast. I laugh. I set the heart down and take off my gloves and then wash my hands. "Thanks Mom," I say.
Colton washes his hands and wipes his mouth. "Thanks you um, Mrs. Reed-Collins," he says. She smiles.
"Just Mrs. Collins. It would be too confusing with my husband to both have Reed-Collins for a last name. And you're Andy's lab partner?" Mom says. Colton nods.
"I'm sorry for...you know vomiting," he says as he scratches his neck.
"It's fine. It doesn't hurt anything," she says. "You got him scrubs?" Mom turns, to asks me.
"Yeah. If not the attendings and residents would on him. He's fresh meat," I say. Mom smiles.
"Have fun, it was nice to meet you, Colton," she says and then goes back to working. Colton and I use the elevator and take it up to the fourth floor. We turn down a couple of hallways. I check the O.R. board and smile. I smile smugly when I find what I'm looking for. I tap on the glass and press the intercom.
"Hey, Trent! Good job on the promotion," I say. She smiles and looks up.
"Thanks," she says. "Who's your friend?"
"My lab partner. You've got a coronary artery bypass, right? Colton, my shit lab partner, didn't know what a real heart looked like. Do you mind if we watch for a bit? He'll know what a real heart looks like and that my boobs are not a heart." At the last bit the scrub nurses and other people turn and look up and frown at Colton. He blushes.
"It's cool with me," she says.
"Thanks for that," Colton mumbles to me as we sit down. I look at him and he's looking at the ground.
"You're supposed to look at that," I tell him, I point to the screen in the corner of the room. He looks up and then looks away quickly. He looks back again and then starts to watch it.
"Is this what you do all day? Talk to doctors and watch surgeries?" he asks me.
"Pretty much, but I also help in the E.R. with traumas and stuff," I tell him.
"I've seen a living heart, can we go now?" Colton asks.
"Do you know where it is? Draw it on my chest," I say. He looks at me and then traces the spot where it is. "You are learning! We can go, but what do you want to do next?"
"What's there to do in a hospital?" He looks at me warily.
"Your be surprised," I say. I grab his hand and drag him down I our next stop.
"Where are you taking me?" he asks.
"Somewhere you'll like," I tell him.
"You can't know what I like. We've only known each other for a couple of days," he says.
"You're really not that hard to understand. I figured you out that first day of biology. And everyone likes where I'm about to take you," I say.
"You don't know everything about me," Colton says. I stop walking.
"Maybe not, but I do know everything about the person you pretend to be. Now, shut up and let me take you to our next stop," I say.
