Prologue
Fever
I wasn't alone. You were never alone in these woods. The night time air was cool, even with thick fur, the feeling made your body feel like there were needles jabbing into your skin. The white full moon was peeking out through the grey clouds, lighting up the woods. Even with the light something didn't feel right.
I stop for a minute.
Sniff the air.
The cold wind blows and moves old leaves rustle and move slowly past my paws.
A branch snaps.
Someone else is here. I'm suddenly running. Behind me I hear footsteps. Footsteps of human feet. Footsteps of a dog's. I can't look back. I have to keep this pace.
The clouds begin to cover the sky more, covering the light that was my last hope. A roar of a thunder covers the sounds of leaves rustling as our feet touch the covered ground. The wind picks up, leaves are dancing as we are racing through the woods. A flash of lightening lights up the woods, brighter than the sun, followed by the loud roar of the monster in the sky. Suddenly, the dry cold ground is soaked with rain and sleet, making it hard to keep from slipping.
The sound of footsteps is getting closer. I hear the sound of snarl, I turn my head quickly and look back, I'm eye to eye with a beast with amber eyes. His eyes distract me and he snaps at my back leg, making me yelp in pain, but I continue running. The air is getting colder, I'm nowhere near home, these parts of the woods are unknown to me. A streak of light flashes through the night sky, a roar ripples through the autumn night. My back leg is killing me, the pain distracts me from the upcoming drop in the ground, and I'm suddenly tumbling down a hill of mud and leaves.
The race for life and death ended.
