"You could probably just say hi!" He smiled.
"No. It's not that simple!" I groaned.
"It's just some random guy!"
"No. It's THE guy."
"Ummm.... I didn't know putting THE in front of a guy changed them."
"It does you idiot!"
"K, fine then... don't talk to him."
"No."
"Yes."
"Why!!"
"You said you were desperate. It's not like he's going to say no to a face like yours!"
"Thank you and no thank you. I am not asking to go out with him, I am simply asking for a job!"
"Hah!"
"What!"
"It's simple. Just walk up to him and say, 'I saw that you were looking for someone to replace your retired staff. I am interested in the job and have good experience' then give him your resume."
"You make it sound like a piece of cake!" I groaned. He smirked and shoved me towards Mr Hughes. The manager. I bumped into him. He almost dropped his coffee. He looked at me like I was vermin.
"You almost spilt my coffee! You have to have a excuse then young lady."
"Ummm.... actually... Sir, I was interested in the job?" He replied meekly. His face changed completely. He was now smiling.
"Ok then. See you in two days. seventeen dollars per hour and your training day is tomorrow!" He seemed so excited. I turned to look at Chase. He laughed. "Ash, you don't need to be so formal with me!"
"Sorry Sir."
"Tut, tut. Your the girl that has captured my son's heart. You are special."
"Ok then.... Mr Hughes?"
"No, Garrett."
"K, then Garrett!" I said excitedly. I turned on my heel, only to be embraced by Chase's broad chest.
"Good job Ace." He whispered in my ear. He enveloped his hand in mine and we walked out the cafe.
"Chase?"
"Yes?"
"Why are you so helpful?"
"I believe that it is a boyfriends job... to be helpful."
"I see." I smiled and we walked down the footpath. "You, know. I'm quite lucky!"
"Huh?"
"I have a boyfriend that doesn't cheat on me, that helps me and understands me, not to mention his looks."
"That must be a pretty cool person!" He grinned, tightening the grip on my hand. Chase was my protector, my friend. In the abyss of high school Chase saved me. I was the girlfriend of a popular person. None of his friends even knew who I was. But it was perfect. We met when we were partnered to do an assignment. You could call it a cliche, bad-boy-meets-good-girl, type thing. We sat on a bench and I rested my head on his shoulder. "Ace, next week on our one-year I've planned something special." He caressed my hair.
"I thought.."
He cut me off, "No, I will. It's going to be good."
"So, what is it?"
"Surprise!"
"Right..." I said, "So, i'm going to be scared out of my wits?"
"No," He frowned, "You're going to be so happy that you won't even think of touching that weird book."
"Chase!" I promptly got up, "It's not some weird book! It's Harry Potter and I will never stop reading it." I scowled. Every night a read only one chapter of the harry potter series. I'd already read them before but they were my favourite.
"Right.. not weird." He said as rolled his eyes. I messed up his hair and stomped off.
"Bye Chase."
"Ace!"
"C ya tomorrow!" I waved sarcastically and headed home. I wasn't actually angry at him, but I was mad. I hated it when someone made fun of my book, especially when Chase did. But he doesn't mean any harm. It's just some silly antic.
