"I'm heading over to dinner at the Murphys'!" I called to my parents, before leaving our home and making my way into the corridor. It was cold in the Ark, the way it always was, and so you pulled the sleeves of your sweatshirt over your wrists.
Once you got to Murphy's home, you reached out your arm to knock on the door but stopped halfway when the front door was ripped open, revealing a frantic-looking Murphy. "John?" you asked, and he pulled you towards him in a hug before you could say anything else.
"Please don't come inside." Murphy pleaded quietly, hiding his face in your hair. "They've already embarrassed me and you're not even inside yet," He added, which made you break out into laughter.
"Your parents are amazing!" you reminded him, detaching yourself from Murphy's body so you could examine Murphy's expression. "What's wrong?" you asked, knowing there was something else.
"Nothing," Murphy lied, his eyes focused on the floor. "I'm just... not in the mood to listen to my parents tell me how perfect you are, and how much I should be more like you," he added, meeting my eyes again and giving me a fake smile.
"John," you frowned, running your hands up Murphy's arms and cupping his cheeks. "That isn't true and you know it," you stated firmly. "You're a really great person, and your parents love you so much." You reminded Murphy. "And I'm not perfect."
Murphy snorted. "Right. And force isn't equal to mass times acceleration." He added sarcastically, which made you roll your eyes.
"Nerd." You joked, and Murphy laughed, tucking a stray curl of hair behind your ear. He looked at you with so much affection, and somehow, it made your breath catch in your throat.
"[Y/N]!" someone exclaimed, and you and Murphy both turned to see his mother standing behind Murphy, grinning at your arrival. "It's so good to see you again! Come in, come in!" she practically shouted, grabbing your arm and pulling you inside.
"Oh great," Murphy muttered, closing the front door as you were pulled into the dining room."John told us what your favourite meal was, so we made it for you!" Murphy's dad said, after greeting you with a handshake. "It's good to see you again, [Y/N]," he echoed what Murphy's mother had told you.
"It's great to see you guys again too." You laughed, taking a seat at the place Murphy's parents pointed out to you, right next to Murphy himself. "And really, you didn't have to. I'm fine with anything."
"Good to know our daughter-in-law is a flexible, kind woman." Murphy's mother said happily, and Murphy made an odd choking sound next to you."Mom," Murphy snapped, his cheeks burning with embarrassment.
"Oh stop being so embarrassed, John!" she replied, rolling her eyes. "The both of you have a wonderful relationship! It's only a matter of time."
"Um," you began awkwardly, blushing. "John and I aren't dating."
"Yet." Murphy's parents both chorused, and it only made you blush even redder. As you looked to your left, Murphy looked away and refused to make eye contact with you.
Dinner became a little awkward from then on.
"Sorry about them." Murphy apologised, closing his bedroom door behind you. Dinner had just finished, and Murphy was quick to make an exit, pulling you out of the dining room before you could properly thank his family. "They can be... a lot." He added. "But I love them. How can I not?" Murphy fixed his statement so that he didn't seem unappreciative of his parents. He truly did love his family a lot.
"They're great." You promised him, looking around Murphy's bedroom. It was the first time you had ever been there, oddly enough. You had known Murphy for years by then, but you were hardly ever invited into his home, and never invited into his room.
It was cleaner than you expected, with books stacked orderly on his little shelf, and there were a lot of pictures plastered across the walls, and in frames on almost every surface.
Pictures of you.
Some of them had only you in them, and others were of both you and Murphy together. You smiled, picking up a frame from his bedside table and inspecting the picture behind the glass. "This is cute." You observed, flipping the frame around to display it to Murphy.
Murphy put his jacket down on his bed and turned, just in time to see the frame, and let out a yelp, grabbing it from your hands. Your eyes widened in surprise at his actions. "Sorry." Murphy apologised, realising how odd his actions seemed. "I just..." Murphy looked down, seeming lost in thought.
"It's okay," you assured Murphy, stepping closer to him. "Whatever it is you don't have to tell me." you added. "But... you've been acting really weird all evening." You recalled. "And if there's something wrong, you should definitely tell me."
"What do you mean?" Murphy asked, pretending he had no idea what you were talking about. "I haven't been acting differently." He lied straight to you face. This made you angry.
"Stop that!" you exclaimed. "Stop lying to protect yourself! I'm your best friend and you feel the need to lie to me?"
"Don't make this about you." Murphy snapped, and you raised an eyebrow in surprise at his words.
"Wow," you sighed. "It's so great that we can always be so open with each other," you said sarcastically. "Murphy." You added, calling him by his last name, the way he made other people do. You turned around, about to leave his bedroom, when Murphy pulled you back around and placed his lips onto yours.
It was cheesy and cliché, but you leaned in closer to Murphy, wrapping your arms around his waist and kissing him back, your stomach filling with the feeling of butterflies. His lips were soft and smooth, but slightly dry from licking them so much during the conversations you had with him that evening. "You're so lame," you muttered, causing Murphy to laugh as he pulled away.
"I love you. And I'm sorry I didn't tell you." Murphy apologised to you, smiling. "It's not exactly an easy subject to talk about."
"Then don't talk," you shrugged, leaning over to kiss him again. "And I love you too." You whispered against his lips.
