“Sweetheart, I am not going to lose you, you’re the only thing I have, please do this for me,” Will, begs as he holds his daughter’s bony hands. His gaze diverts to her thin hands from her face. He realizes that his daughter is no longer the happy healthy girl he raised, that she became a victim of life’s unmerciful pain, and she’s definitely not okay.
Sapphire grimaces, pulling her hand from her father’s and says, “Dad, I’m going to be fine, I don’t need this rehab, I might even die in here.” Her voice is desperate to have him change his mind. She glances at the facility behind her; looking at it makes her feel she’s going to enter prison. She pleads, “Dad, please don’t let me stay here. I promise, I’m not going to use them anymore, please.”
Will shakes his head then smiles helplessly, “I don’t know what else I’m supposed to do Safi, this is the third time I saw you nearly dead on the floor. I’m not getting any younger Safi, call me selfish, but I don’t want to die alone and see these filthy drugs consume you.” His eyes start to burn as he feels the tears form by the edge of his eyes. “You are young, and strong. I know you will come back a changed girl.” He places his hand on her shoulders, grinning with hope.
She looks at her father intently for the first time since she was young and innocent, before she met her dear friend, heroin. There are wrinkles evident on his forehead and at the edge and beneath his eyes, his skin starts to become loose, and his ebony black hair is thinner. It is the first time she tries to think hard of how old her father is, she doesn’t know. She suddenly sees both hope and sadness upon her father’s chocolate brown eyes. She breathes, “I hope you’re right about this.”
Will takes her in his arms, embracing his daughter, as wishes to see her a better person after the three-month program. “I love you, sweetheart,” he speaks, “Make your old man proud.”
“I will…” she replies.
