Sapphire is surprised to see the delightful young bachelor in front of him as a former addict. She wants to ask what led him to become one but she decides not to since he might retort with a question after. “Oh, we’re on the same boat,” she shrugs, looking away from him.
“Not yet… I will put you on the same boat, you will be sober, I promise you that,” he smiles then pauses for three seconds as he keenly looks at her. “You took heroin, didn’t you?”
“How did you know?” she says lackadaisically, crossing her arms.
“A few scabs on your face, well, let’s just say I know which is which,” he replies, but soon feels awkward because he realizes that he suddenly makes her uncomfortable.
“Whatever…” she rolls her eyes. Claudia enters the room with her pancakes and places it in front of Sapphire. “Here you go dear,” the old woman smiles.
“Good, what is taking you so long to do this?” Sapphire mutters, then starts to eat the pancake.
“Sorry dear,” Claudia apologizes then leaves to continue her other chores.
“That was –“ rude, Paris is about to say something but he chooses not to finish it knowing that Sapphire has a short temper. “Well, I wanted to show you the lake, and we’ll plant trees afterwards and also, we’ll be cooking dinner for tonight.”
Sapphire wipes the syrup on the corner of her lip with a napkin, and after she swallows the pancake in her mouth, she speaks, “Wait, we pay you a significant amount of money just to have you people, order us to do menial tasks?”
Paris shakes his head, “No, just come with me and I’ll show you why we’re gonna do these menial tasks.”
“F-ck, no!” she exclaims, then vehemently slices her pancakes. The thought of doing those things is killing her already. She have done all of those things with Nate, and she doesn’t want to do it again without him, worse with another person who closely resembles him.
“Oh… well, I hope you change your mind,” he stands up and walks away.
She watches him walk away from the table and realizes that he is trying to help her. She’s been too harsh on everyone who interacts with her. She heaves a sigh and debates to herself whether she should follow him and apologize or just let it go.
From the window, she gazes upon the clear field and the magnificent view of the lake. It’s beautiful, she admits but it’s no longer her thing. She sees Paris, cleaning his bike under the sun. A pang of guilt hits her again, and thinks of saying sorry for her rude behavior. She wants to change for her dad, and for herself but she’s too scared to do so. Another reason is she’s having a difficult time moving on from Nate’s death. She blames herself for that night, if she agrees to just chill in his house on their anniversary, then he’s still alive, cuddling her. Not like this, she’s in rehab, while he’s lying under the ground. A tear fell from her eyes, and she recalls her father’s words. He’s the only thing she has right now. Her father is not getting any younger and she doesn’t want him to end up in a nursing home with a stranger taking care of him.
She hesitantly goes downstairs then out to the morning fields, the grass underneath her shoes feels great and the wind of the countryside brings a momentary solace. She’s still anxious though, it’s been a while since she had a moment like this. She walks up to Paris and says, “Hey, I’m sorry. I hope you can forgive me for being rude. I-I don’t mean to, y’know, say that.”
He smiles at her, “It’s alright, I understand.”
“You’re really nice, aren’t you?” she comments.
He chuckled, “So, you’ve changed your mind?”
She shyly nods as a response.
