it is your first day at the Chicago medical centre.
"so newbie the first patient is yours so we can road test your alleged skill," Will Halstead says teasing you
"if my skill were alleged I would be practising elsewhere" you retort
"and just because I am new doesn't give" but before you can finish your sentence Doctor Stohl comes in frantically
"everyone as of now no matter what position you hold everyone is in trauma" he announces
"what I injuries are we expecting?" you ask
"All I was told was there was a warehouse fire" he replies
"so burns" you reply
five minutes later and Gabriela Dawson comes in pushing a stretcher with a young girl with burnt arms
"I've got this," you say as you run up to Gabriela
"let's get the patient to trauma room 10" a minute later and you, two nurses and Gabriela are in trauma room ten
"ok move her slowly on to the bed on three, one, two three" they move the patient slowly on to the bed
"ok Jennifer can you hold the head steady because we need to intubate stat," you say as Dawson leaves
"ok she is steady," Jennifer tells you
"ok let's go," you say as you start forcing the tube down the girl's throat
"it's in, that opened up her airways," you say observing the rise and fall of the girl's chest.
another minute later and you are in the main foyer
"(Y\N) a little help," Will asks
"with what?" you reply as you frantically run over to Will and his patient
"can you help me with keep this man's leg steady," he replies
"yes I can," you say noticing the slight twitch but before you can do anything the man starts convulsing
"nurse get me 5ml of epi," you demand a nurse leaves and a moment later she comes back with a needle and passes it to you and you inject it into the man's neck and his convulsing clams down
"ok get him to trauma room 3" Will instructs.
three minutes later and two paramedics come in with another teenaged girl and you go over to check on her
"75 per cent of her body is covered in burns and she was intubated on scene, she was also the last one to be rescued" the paramedic informs you
"ok let's get her to trauma room 8," you say but before you can take her anywhere her mother comes in
"my daughter," she cries as she bends down to hug her daughter
"Sorry ma'am but you can't do that we need to get her to a trauma room so we can asses her," you say trying to pull the girl's mother away from her
"I will do the best we can,"
"ok," the mother sobs
30 minutes later and the chaos has died down and you are checking on the girl and her mother
"will she be alright?" the girl's mother asks
"it depends if she A) survives the next 24 hours and B) her body accepts the skin graphs we need to do ma'am" you reply gravely
"please call me Jess and will she be alright?" she asks desperately
"like I said it depends" you reply. the monitor starts beeping and flashing red
"O2 stats dropping pulse is tacky I need some help," you call out, Will and five nurses enter with a defibrillator and jess leaves the room.
"the girl has no pulse," you say noticing the monitor screen, you grab the defibrillator paddles
"charging three hundred and clear," you say as you shock her. nothing happens.
"charging three-sixty and clear," you say shocking her again and nothing happens again.
"(Y\N) she is dead, time of death 1709," Will announces gravely
"I'll go tell her mum then," you say
three minutes later and you are in the waiting room talking to Jess
"I'm so sorry," you say sadly
"what happened?" Jess asks
"she died of burn shock," you say.
Jess bursts into tears and you give her a hug out of kindness
