you are talking to one of your patients who is awaiting her test results
"are you sure I'll be alright?" she asks because she doesn't understand what's going on
"it depends on the test results and as far as I can tell you will be fine" you reply trying to comfort her
A buzzer goes off, it's the code blue alarm
"I'll be back," you say as you leave quickly
thirty seconds later and you have made it to the source and you start compressions
"push five mils of epi and charge to two hundred Jules," you command as you are doing chest compressions on Alexander
"charging two hundred," Will says
"halt compressions, clear"
You stop compressions and everyone stands clear and Will places the paddles on his chest and he shocks him which does nothing. You continue chest compressions.
"push another two of epi and charge to two hundred again" you command again with a little more desperation
"come on Alex"
"charging two hundred," Will says
"halt compressions, clear,"
You stop compressions and everyone stands clear again. Will places the paddles on his chest again and shocks it does nothing
"(Y/N) are you going to call it" Will asks
"yes time of death..." you can't finish your sentence because you are so overwhelmed by a bad feeling of grief
"time of death 0930," Will says doing the hard part for you
"excuse me," you say as you leave
______
Ten minutes later you are on the balcony again thinking the only time you had felt grief as bad as this is when your mother died
"I'm sorry for your loss," Will says announcing herself
"thanks, Will I just need some time alone to process what happened," you say thinking about how your dad left when your mother was diagnosed with cancer
"actually can I tell you something that I haven't told anyone?" you ask thinking he will be the best person to trust
"yes you can if it makes you feel better" she replies in the knowledge that it's better to be helpful
"well, you know why I haven't told you about my dad?" you say
"it's because he left when my mum was diagnosed with cancer. He gave no reason which made things ten times worse,"
"oh is there anything I can do for you?" he asks
"other than letting Tommy know no and Will I'm sorry Alex meant a lot to me because he got me through Med school and in fact, if I didn't catch the ED bug, I would have chosen oncology," you say getting your emotions out
You get your phone out and you call your brother
"Tommy I have some news but you're not going to like it," you say
"he didn't make it the autopsy will tell us why but I think his heart gave out"
you hang up not wanting to hear the response because you know it will make things worse for you
"remember (Y/N) there was nothing you could do even if you wanted to," Will says
"I know," you reply a little heavy hearted
