the year was 1962
"base up you blockheads."

im 16 years old  and it was summer in sunny california. school was out and all the kids from my block played out in their backyards and bought 25 cent ice cream cones at the only ice cream parlor in town.

"why you acting all ape shit y/n/n." squints snickered at me. my wubba bubba bubble gum stuck to my molars as i blew a bubble in anger.

"whoever hits a homer this inning gets me to buy em some more of them cancer sticks (cigarettes). deal?" my voice sounded muffled with the chunks of gum in between my teeth.

everyone stood silent except yeah-yeah bitchin in excitement like an idiot that he was.

"some candy asses we got here huh? (wimps) think you can win against the greatest on this sandlot?" i chuckled, gripping the dense baseball in my hand.

a bunch of angry no's came from the boys as i smiled at them in victory. might i add i was the only girl on that sandlot.

"alrighty then, who's up first?"

"hold on y/n/n, benny isn't her-"

"shut your trap and let's play. benny can join in when he gets here." i growled. "so who's up first."

"i am. let's see what you got sugarplum." a voice i've never heard before filled my ears. i managed to peek a glance at the mysterious chick walking in front of me with a bat in her hands.

but i didn't question it, because benny trailed right behind ,huffing and trying to catch up to her. he had mentioned his cousin was coming to visit. "so this is your infamous cousin rodriguez?" i smirked at him.

"hey! camila's the name. why don't you pitch me the ball before the sun goes down will ya?" she sassed.

the same dull expression engulfed my face as i gripped the baseball in my hand and pitched it as curved as i could towards the girl.

the sound of the the ball cracking against the bat made my ears ring. the dust filled my eyes as the girl ran all the way to home base.

damn can she burn some rubber, i thought to myself.

a smile pursed onto my face as she breathed heavily on home base. i could hear the rest of the boys gasp behind me.

"y/n is smilin!" they all murmured.

"pshh i always smile." i grumbled. camila giggled and leaned on her bat. i felt all eyes on me as i felt all the blood rush to my cheeks.

"what are you idiots looking at."

"a sore looser." benny smirked back at me. i rolled my eyes and headed into the ball pin and sat down, chugging down a water bottle.

"your curve ball was badass."

i looked up at the girl and smiled weakly. "thanks."
