PETE’S POV

I had wanted to drive for the first leg because Antonia looked exhausted. She had so much pressure placed on her lately from Patrick and his misdemeanors and then last night must have wiped it out of her too. She looked so drained and gaunt that I was actually worrying about her.

“Sweetheart, please pull over and let me drive. You’ve gone all pasty colored and I can’t stand to see you like that. You’re just too stressed out and you need to relax a bit.”

She maintained she was fine. “Yeah, you’re fine. Tell your face that because it looks like it’s disagreeing right now.”

She scoffed that comment off and adjusted her sunglasses.

“Antonia, stop being stubborn. You’re going to crash the car if you carry on this way.”

“Look, Pete, I know you care about me and thank you for your concern but I will be fine until the next stop. You are the one who should be resting because the next gas stop is further.”

There was no swaying this woman. I kissed the back of her hand and fell asleep.

TONY’S POV

We had 30 minutes more until we could stop. I was struggling to stay awake. My body must have gone into shock because I was freezing and my head felt like a mess. I turned the heat up in the car and felt relief as my fingers started getting warmer. It was a shock for me because I was leaving my home in Chicago – leaving Patrick – and starting a new life with someone new and I didn’t know how to handle all the hurt Patrick had been putting me through without it affecting Pete. I couldn’t hold what Patrick had done to me against him because they were two very different people.

My eyes were getting heavy and suddenly I didn’t feel like I should be driving anymore. I was about to wake Pete up and that’s when I lost control of the car. I tried desperately to regain the control but I couldn’t. In that moment it felt as though I had lost my voice because I wanted to scream to Pete but the words just couldn’t escape my throat. The car rolled off the road and down the embankment twice before it stopped.

I closed my eyes and everything went black.
