"Honey, please get ready. We're gonna be late!" my mother shouts from the kitchen down stairs.
I sigh as a fret over what dress I should wear to the dinner party I'm going to. My choices are between a long, turquoise one and a long red one. The problem is I can spot ten things my parents will judge with both of them. I always have to worry about other people's thoughts; I'm not even my own person anymore.
I end up going with the red dress. I haven't worn it before and I'm sure the other guests will like it. My parents love when their friends and strangers compliment them and their children. After I slip the dress on and put my hair up neatly, I head downstairs. I wear no makeup, it's forbidden. Only tramps cover their faces in makeup. At least that's what Mum claims.
My mother, father, and little sister are all ready. Dad is in his super nice and expensive suit. His hair is gelled back and his smile is wide. Mum is wearing a pretty black dress that goes past her mid-thigh. Her hair is in a tight bun, sleek with hair spray. My sister, Amelia, is in a cute pink dress. We're all picture perfect.
It doesn't take long to get to Dad's boss's house. The car ride was deathly quiet though. It's always silent with my family. But not in the public eye. Never in the public eye. Ilene, my dad's boss's wife, greets us as soon as we get out if our car. She has a huge grin plastered on her pretty, tan face. She and Mum go off on their own to gossip about anyone but themselves. Jeff, Dad's boss, comes to say hello to Dad. They both ignore Amelia and I.
Dad and Jeff leave towards the bar inside the mansion. I don't say anything to my sister and she returns the silence. That's all it ever is. Silence and awkwardness. Amelia looks at me in the corner of her eye but quickly looks away. I sigh and walk away. I'm used to this type of relationship with my sister. We used to be really close, but somehow that changed.
I go inside and try to avoid my parents' friend. Unfortunately, a couple catch me. The man is dressed similarly to my dad. Nice suit, slick hair, and a big grin. The woman is in a green dress, heels, and her hair in curls. She has a glass of wine in her hands. Great. I smile pleasantly as always.
"Hello," I greet sweetly.
The couple grin enthusiastically. I'm a professional at charming adults. My parents taught me. "It's been so long since I've seen you! Have you met my husband? Mark?"
"No, I don't think I have," I say. I don't even remember your name, I say to myself.
"Well, allow me to introduce you two. Love, this is Zoey Bernard. Zoey, this is my husband Mark Tomlinson."
"It's good to meet you, Mr. Tomlinson," I shake hands with him.
"Likewise," he says. "And please, call me Mark."
The woman- what is her name?!- gives me a big hug. "Oh, I've missed you! It's been too long, dear!"
Mark chuckles. "Okay, Johanna. Let's not suffocate the girl."
That's right! Johanna (aka Jay) Tomlinson! "I'm sorry. I better go find your parents. We'll catch up another time, okay?" I nod with a smile. Jay and Mark walk away in search of my parents.
I go straight for the backyard. The last time I was at this house, I found a secret spot back there for me to hide. I didn't want to be around all these people. There's a lot of people back here but I somehow manage to avoid any long conversations.
I reach my spot, but find that it's already occupied. A boy about my age is sitting there. Despite my anger, I try to be nice. "Excuse me? You're in my spot."
The boy looks up at me. He gives me a fake smile. "What's your name?" he asks.
"Zoey Bernard," I answer.
He looks around the area of where he is sitting. "Nope. Don't see your name here. Sorry, guess you can't prove it's yours."
The nerve! I sigh. Some people are just rude. "What's your name?" I ask.
He grins. "Louis. Louis Tomlinson."
