MUNIFA
I picked up the phone "hello" "hello how are you?" He said and from the voice I knew it wasn't sultan. Who could it be? I thought. "I'm fine you?" I replied slowly trying to figure out who was speaking. "Alhamdulillah I'm good. I know you don't know who's speaking. It's Salim." He said at the other end. "Oh yeah. Salim how have you been?" I said obviously sounding too nice. "Alhamdulillah fine. How about you?" He asked "I'm good" I replied and then kept quiet not knowing what else to say. "Sorry I wasn't able to call you since the other day and..." "it's fine." I said cutting him off. "Ok. Thanks. Are you still in Zaria?" He asked "yh. But I just finished exams so I'll be leaving anytime." I replied. "Oh ok. Allah Ya bada sa'a. I just called to say hi." "Oh that's so nice of you. Thanks." I said. "It's a pleasure." "Alright then. Bye."
Sayyid finished exams a few days later and we left for Abuja. Everybody was at home except Bappa. He had traveled to London for business. Adda fiyya was almost due by the time we came back home. I couldn't help but think of the new baby. I was too excited. I was going to be an aunt. Adda fiyya had already scanned and it was a girl so I had bought a lot of pinky stuff for the little princess.
I thought of calling Salim today but I changed my mind. I didn't want him to think I was into him or something so I just let it slide. I called Yusrah instead. She picked at the first ring "were you expecting a call?" I asked laughing. "No. Why?" She asked. "You couldn't even wait for the phone to ring a little bit like you knew I was going to call." I said. "Lmao. Abeg free me. Adda fiyya ta haihu ne?" She asked excited. "So I can't call you sai Adda fiyya ta haihu? Well she's still pushing her big stomach up and down. Her edd is even 2weeks from today so there's still time." I said. "Toh Allah Ya kaimu." "Ameen Ya Rabb. How's Mama and everybody at home?" I asked. "Kowa is fine alhamdulillah. Akwai gist ne?" She asked expectedly. "Nothing o. Kawai I just called." "Toh shikenan. Yauwa I wanted asking you. Are you free this Saturday?" She asked. "Yh maybe. What's happening on Saturday?" I asked excited. "I just wanted us to have lunch at my place. Mama said I could invited a friend." She said. "Ok no problem. Allah Ya kaimu." "Ameen Ya Rabb. Toh shikenan." "Alright toh. Bye." I said. "Bye" and she hung up.
I prayed Isha and turned on my laptop to watch Game of Thrones when Adda fiyya came in. She looked at me and just headed straight to bed. "You're sleeping early today?" I asked with my eyes still fixed on my laptop. "Yh I want to go to the market tomorrow morning In Sha Allah." She said dragging the blanket to cover herself. "Alright goodnight" I said. "Goodnight. If you're not going to use the light please turn it off." "Ok tohm." I said and stood up to turn off the lights.
"Munifa! Munifa! Munifa! Wake up!" I heard a voice from afar. It sounded more like a dream but it kept coming closer. "Munifa!!!" She screamed and I woke up startled trying to check my phone for the time. "Adda fiyya it's 3am. Why are you up by this time of the night? Is Bappa back?" I asked sitting up. "No! Go and wake Ammi up. I'm having severe abdominal pains." She said crying. I quickly jumped out of bed and rushed to Ammi's room. I knocked impatiently and opened the door. She was on her prayer mat. "Ammi. Adda fiyya. I think she's in labour." And I left almost immediately. I got back to the room and Ammi came in right after me. Adda fiyya was kneeling down at the edge of the bed on the rug that spreads on the floor. Ammi helped her up and asked me to wake Sayyid up so he could drive us to the hospital.
The hospital was about 10mins drive. We got there and the nurses wheeled her into the labour room. The doctor on call went in rushing. We sat there for almost an hour without anything. Nurses went in and out of the room but no one said anything. It was already subh and Adda fiyya was still in the labour room so Ammi asked us all to go and pray. There was a mosque in the hospital so we all went to pray. I took so long asking Allah to grant Adda fiyya a safe delivery and a healthy baby.
We came out of the mosque and headed back into the hospital. Almost immediately when we got to the labour room, the doctor came out. He approached Ammi with his face expressionless and asked "are you the lady's mother?" "Yes I am" Ammi replied standing up. "Come with me please" he said and headed back into the labour room. I felt my heart sink. What was it that he couldn't say in front of us all? I thought. Sayyid tapped me and I realised I had tears rolling down my cheeks. The door opened and we quickly stood up.
