Chapter 3: Coldplay – Ever Tear is a Waterfall

I woke to the sound of a constant beeping. I groggily wiped my tired eyes and looked around the room. I watched as Jack slammed his hand on the alarm and began to climb out of the bed, heading towards the bathroom.

“Good morning.” I whispered.

Jack stopped and turned to face me just as he got the bathroom doorway.

“Good morning beautiful.” Jack said smiling at me.

“Where are you going?” I asked him.

“I got to get to work, remember.”

“It’s been five years today.” I said sadly.

Jack gave me a sympathetic look but never said anything.

I sighed. “Can’t you stay in bed with me all day?”

Jack smiled grimly. “I honestly wouldn’t want to do anything else, but we need the money for next month’s rent. Sorry Babe.” And with that he turned and walked into the bathroom, closing the door behind him. A few seconds later I could hear the shower turn on. I decided that there was no use going back to sleep now that I was awake so I slowly got out of bed and threw a jumper over my singlet and tights and walked out to the kitchen.

I made myself a cup of coffee and sat down on the couch and flicked through a magazine I bought the other day. I was half way through my coffee when there was a knock on the door. I placed the cup down on the coffee table and headed towards the door. I opened the door to find a delivery man standing there holding a clipboard in one hand and a pen in the other. At his feet was a fairly large box.

“Hi are you Miss Scarlett Perry?” the man asked as he looked down at his clipboard.

“Yes that’s me.”

“Good, this box is for you. Now if you could just sigh here.” He passed the clipboard to me and pointed at the bottom of the page.

I quickly signed the paper and gave back the sheets to the delivery man. He then passed the box to me, said goodbye, and was out of my vision quicker than I could say hallelujah.  I took the box and went into the lounge room, placing it on the coffee table.

I looked down at the sticker on the top of it to see who had sent it. When I saw the name I felt my whole body froze.

‘Mrs Jane Murdoch’

“Jai’s Mum.” I whispered to myself. I slowly sat down on the couch, forcing myself to breath slowly.

‘What would she send me?” I thought to myself.

Suddenly Jack came out of the bathroom and entered the main room of our apartment.

“Hey Babe, what’s that?” He asked, pointing at the box.

“I don’t know. It’s from Mrs Murdoch.”

Jack paused and then walked over to me, placing a hand on my shoulder and giving it a light squeeze.

“There’s a letter here, have you read it yet?” He asked, picking up the envelope that had been taped to the top of the box.

I shook my head as Jack sat down next to me, looking at the unopened envelope.

“Do you want to read it?” he asked me quietly.

I shook my head again.

“Do you want me to read it for you?”

I nodded my head then picked up my coffee and took a sip. I waited patiently as Jack carefully opened up the envelope and pulled out a hand written letter.
