Chapter 7: Jason Mraz - I Won't give up

Jack’s Point Of View:

I stood there stunned. I could move, I couldn’t breathe. It was like all the life had been sucked out of me. Those four words were enough to cut me so deep.

‘I don’t need you.’

She couldn’t mean it. Could she? I mean after everything we have been through, together, it was obvious that after surviving the past five years she definitely needed me, and I know that I need her, there is no doubt to that.

I finally managed to drag my gaze away from the closed door that once led to ‘our’ bedroom and turned towards the man who had witnessed my heart break just that tiny bit more.

“What?” I snapped at him.

“Oh sorry I didn’t mean to-“The guy, named Mason, paused mid-sentence. “Look mate I’m sorry if I have come in between the two of you’s, but I honestly didn’t mean to cause any harm. I just needed a friend and Scar was there when I had no one else. She listened and never judged me, I guess that’s why I liked her. But again I’m sorry, and if you want I promise to stay away from both of you.” Mason turned and began to head towards the door.

“Wait.” I called out.

I had my back to Mason, but I heard his footsteps cease.

I waited another second for him to continue to walk out the door or even say something, but neither came. I turned around and faced him.

“Look, Mason. I shouldn’t have snapped at you before. I guess with Scar’s history I was just a little worried about her. She’s not exactly the most stable person around and I thought that the drugs would have made her go completely downhill.” I took a deep breath.

“Plus when I walked in and found the two of you sitting here laughing together I guess I got jealous.” I looked up at Mason, waiting for him to tell me to get over myself or something.

But he said nothing.

“Honestly I haven’t seen Scar laugh and look so happy like she did when she was with you in years. And knowing that someone else other than me could make her feel like that really angered me. See no one has made her act like that since high school.”

This sparked Mason’s interest and he finally spoke.

“What happened in high school to make her stop being so happy?”

I didn’t respond to his question instantly. Instead I wandered over to the table and took and seat. I stayed quiet for a while, just playing with the edge of the table cloth. I finally decided that Mason may as well know.

“In our senior year of school Scar’s boyfriend and both of our best friend died.”

I sensed Mason walk over and take a seat next to me.

“Oh shit man, I’m sorry.”

I forced a small smile before continuing. “You see Scar and Jai had only just gotten together and Jai was recovering from a drug and alcohol addiction when they were hit by another drunk driver. Scar came out of the accident with nothing but a few broken ribs, but Jai was announced dead at the scene.”

I paused and rubbed my temple where I would feel a headache coming on. “When Jai died Scar went completely downhill. She began acting out, drinking more, sneaking into clubs and hooking up with random strangers. And then she became friendly with the guy who supplied Jai with his drugs. It wasn’t in till a year later when the anniversary of Jai’s death came around that she really broke down.”
