Chapter 4

The blurred vision of the world slowly came back into focus as Teran opened his eyes. At first all he could see was a hazy green and brown, but that soon started to fade. He realised he was in his tent, it seemed smaller than it normally did. All it fit was a single rack for him to sleep on, a small case of clothes that was stored away under the bed and a small desk at the base of his bed which held his small computer. The computer was merely used for checking updates on the Empire’s ‘official’ news bulletin for the planet. Almost nothing was ever true, unless the news was a threat statement.

As his eyes cleared up a bit more and as the grogginess slowly ebbed away he realised why his quarters seem tinier than usual; there was someone sitting on a stool at the edge of his bed.

Vrik slowly came into focus as Teran squinted and widened his eyes trying to clear his sight.

“That’s a little creepy, you watching me sleep and all,” Teran said to his friend humorously, raising an eyebrow.

“Teran, there’s someone you need to see,” Vrik told him outright.

“How long have I been out?” Teran replied, ignoring what Vrik had just said to him. Teran rubbed his head and tried to sit up. Pins and needles shot throughout his body as he tried. The sensations sent chills up his spine and, while it kind of hurt; it almost made him crack up in laughter.

Vrik frowned, giving him an annoyed look. “Twelve hours. It’s nearly eight at night.

"Teran there is someone you need to see,” he repeated.

Teran processed the information. Twelve hours, not as long as I thought... Oh hey, silver lining, I still get to have some pork. Then what Vrik said afterwards registered. “You’re damn right there is,” he said a little angrily, standing up. The pins and needles were almost gone, and their residue was bearable.

“No, not Karem. There’s someone else.” Vrik stated, standing up as well and putting a hand on Teran to stop him.

The irritated look quickly turned into a cheeky smile. “Oh, alright,” Teran said, rolling his eyes. “But, I was looking forward to another round, now that I have had some sleep.”

Vrik let out a small laugh and shook his head. “You’re insufferable. Come on, there is someone from the Kalorin Royal Guard here. He has a personal message for you.” Vrik noticed the confused look on his pal’s face. “Don’t ask, I don’t know.”

Teran’s tent’s canvas flaps flew open and Sura walked in. A big blast of roasting pig hit Teran and filled his nostrils.

“I smell that the pig is on its way.”

“You may not get the chance to taste it. Hurry up, he is waiting.” Sura said, holding the tent open for the two of them.

She heard Teran mumble something about eating the pig as he walked passed.

“Good to see you’re alright,” Sura said quietly to him as she walked behind him.

Teran smiled at her concern “Thanks. Can’t believe Baron did that to me. Karem started it.”

“You’re kidding?” Vrik said sarcastically, turning his head back to glance at Tec. “If he hadn’t you would have killed Karem.”

“He deserved it. Next time he brings up Sasha not even Baron will save him,” Teran said coldly.

“Go and kill him now.” Teran shook his head from side to side, trying to shake away the idea. As much as he wanted to beat the guy, and as true as it was that he would kill him if he brought up Sasha again, there was just something about the way the idea sounded in his head that he didn’t like. He couldn’t put his finger on it.
