Chapter 13

Teran, Vrik, Sura, Karem and Baron had all been hiding behind a cluster of Kalorian Pines at the edge of the man made tree line. Baron and Vrik were both peering out from the sides, inspecting the current situation over at the Hadi base camp which laid just fifteen meters, across a small clearing in the trees, from where they stood now.

The Imperial encampment was surrounded by a three and a half metre orium metal wall. The dark green plated barrier blended in with the darkness that shrouded over the planet during its twilight hours. The only evidence that it was there at all was the slight glint the metal gave off when Kalorin’s moon peaked out from behind the clouds every few minutes. Not only that, but the scattered spotlights which sat on top of the wall inside the small watchtowers at each of the corners around the barricade gave them a pretty good idea of where the wall was. Two Imperial soldiers manned each of the lights, periodically scanning the empty darkness between the base of the defences and the forest with their powerful lights.

Baron and Vrik ducked back behind their cover as the guard, at the watchtower near the gate, ran the bright beam along the tree line.  Baron closed his eyes and counted, there was a pattern to how the soldiers were moving the lights through the darkness. They all knew the plan on how they were going to get in; getting in was the easy part. Getting out, on the other hand, was going to be the real challenge. After a few moment Baron opened his eyes and held up one of his hands to the others, signalling that their operation was about to start. He slowly nodded his head as he continued counting in his mind before he began to drop his fingers one after the other. The other four Guardians were watching him intently, waiting for the instant that he drops his last finger, so that they may sprint out at the right moment.

Three fingers.

Two fingers.

As the last finger dropped to join the rest, the team of Zeuti Guardians dashed out from their cover, just as the spotlight’s beam passed them, leaving them to melt away into the blackness of the night.

The four of them followed Baron, as he ran through the short field. About half way through he made a sharp turn to the right, the others were caught off guard but they followed him without hesitation. Teran was bringing up the rear, and had to push Sura forward quickly as a beam of light passed over the ground they had just been standing on from behind them.

So that’s way Baron made the turn, to avoid the light coming at us from behind. Teran thought to himself as he and Sura hurried behind the others. They were only a mere five metres from the base of the wall now, and Vrik gave them the signal to build up their biofeed. At Baron’s command, the five of them pushed their biofeed out from under their feet as they jumped; easily allowing them to reach the top of the wall and quickly hop over the other side without being noticed. They landed on the ground lightly, and with only the softest of thuds.

The team of Guardians crouched low and against the base of the wall, keeping themselves concealed within the shadows. It felt quite different, seeing what was going on from inside the base, rather than from the other side of the field.

Guard patrols walked in teams of two or three around the base, systematically walking weaving between several buildings and crossing the roads to the smaller complexes that had been erected about the camp.

“Where do you think she is?” Teran asked in a low voice. They had a pretty clear view of several of the buildings and he was trying to decide which would be better to hold someone captive in, but none of them looked like a jail. Every building that they could see was a small squared shack, covered in chromed sheets of steel.

“I think we should be more concerned about where Dalen Curr is,” Karem whispered back in a lowered voice. His breathing was still returning to normal after their little sprint.
