I wait with Ian for mom to come home, passing the time with TV and helping Ian with his homework.
“Kitty?” Ian says after a while, his forehead scrunched up in concentration.
“Hmm, Buddy.” I smile at him but he still seems lost in his own world.
“Why don’t you get homework?” He finally asks, looking up at me accusingly. I chuckle and ruffle his hair before answering him.
“Because, the teachers don’t like giving me homework.” I lie, nonchalantly. “They know I am awesome at studying.”
That satisfies him and he gets back to doing his work. After an hour, Mom still isn’t back and by the minute, I get more frustrated. Finally, I go over to the neighbors to ask them to babysit Ian while I go look for her but they are out and unfortunately there is no one I know who could be willing to babysit Ian till late.
My frustration grows when I am still pacing in the kitchen, trying to figure out what I can do after another half hour.
What about Archer?
What about that nerd?
You could call him and request him to babysit, since he did say he will be willing to help if it involves Ian.
Gah, but I don’t want to talk to Mr. Frowny nerd face.
Well, man the fuck up and call him. He is your only choice.
Fine. Stupid brain.
Your welcome, you ungrateful Imbecile.
I dial his number before I can change my mind and wait until someone picks it up.
“Hello?” Archer’s deep voice comes through the phone.
“Hi, Theron.” I say, making sure my voice carries distaste but no rudeness. I hear a deep frustrated sigh emit from the other side before the nerd speaks again.
“What do you want, Miller?”
“And here I thought nerds were supposed to be polite. I guess I was fucking wrong.” I say in a mocking voice.
“Just spit it out and try not to use any profanity.” He replies, the annoyance clear in his voice.
“Why?” I question. Don’t tell me he is a fucking good boy who hates cussing.
“Just don’t.” I can imagine his teeth clenched as he replies.
“You don’t cuss? What are you? 10? Even some 10 year olds cuss these days.”
“I don’t like cussing, Katherine. Will you just spit out what you called me for at this time.”
I blow through my lips as I realize that I am asking a geek who most probably hates me for help.
“Ian……I need someone to look after him.”
“Why? Where are you going?” He asks, however when I open my mouth to tell him the truth, he speaks again, making anger surge through me. “Need to buy drugs or get another dose of bitchy attitude?”
