I didn't talk to Michael all day. It hurt but I didn't really have a choice.

I was shoving my books into my locker when I heard a familiar voice.

"Hey Maddie." I close my locker and behind it Luke smiled at me.

"Oh, hi Luke." I smile back.

"I heard what happened between you and Mikey and I'm really sorry, I knew and I didn't tell you." He frowns.

"That's not your job, Luke. Don't feel bad, it was his fault not yours." I say and lock my locker.

"Well.. he feels really bad Maddie. And he likes you a whole lot. I've been his friend for a long time and I've never heard him talk about a girl like he talked about you." He talked about me? "He didn't send me to talk to you, but he's my friend and I just wanted to make sure you knew." he gives me a small smile.

For Luke's sake I say, "I know he feels bad, I have too much going on right now anyways. So whatever." I say.

Luke and I say goodbye and we walk in opposite directions.

My day goes on and at lunch Luke sits next to me.

"How are you doing?" he asks.

"I'm ok-"

"Logan and Madeline Carter please come to the office. Logan and Madeline Carter please come to the office." The lady at the attendance office says over the loud speaker.

"I guess that's me." I say questioningly and say goodbye to Luke and walk to the office.

When I got thee Logan was in a panic and on the verge of tears.

"Get in the car." he demanded and we ran out to the parking lot and before I could even close my door Logan is in reverse and zooming down the street at 80 miles per hour.

"Logan what's going on?!" I cry. I had never seen him this on edge before.

"It's mom, she's-" he just starts crying and yelling.

"Logan! She's what?!" I plead. My chest was totally deflated and I couldn't breathe.

"She's- shes-" he sobs louder, "She's dying!" He screams and runs a red light.

"She has been for a-"

"No Maddie! She's dying as we speak if we don't get there in time she's going to be dead and we don't get to say goodbye!" he was getting mad and I couldn't believe what he was saying.

I don't say anything I just grip my seat and wait. That's all I could do.

He speeds the entire way there and illegally parks the car and we run inside, past the receptionist. I felt like everything was going in slow motion. I just couldn't run fast enough. My heart rate was increased to almost triple and my feet pointed harder against the plain white tile of the ICU, a place I was all too familiar with at this point.

Logan burst open my moms hospital room and I ran in there just as there was a high pitch beeping sound and a red line across the life monitor goes flat.

All sound was cancelled out and my vision blurred as I drop to my knees and the end of my moms hospital bed where once she laid smiling and talking and... breathing. Sixteen years isn't enough to have a mom. It isn't enough. I wasn't crying, I couldn't cry. My dad was there holding her hand and that was the last thing I saw before I blacked out.
