What Could Have Been

Saturday came along rather sluggishly and Alex spent most of the day stopping John from leaving the dorm. He knew Burr was setting up and getting things ready and he even found out that Burr could play violin! Score. This is gonna be perfect.

When the evening finally rolled around, Alex made a show of leaving the dorm.
"I am leaving now! I will see you later this evening! After I get back! From where I am going!" He smiled nervously at John as he slowly shuffled out the door.

"Where are you going?"

"Thought you'd never ask," Alex chirped, "I'm actually gonna go spend the evening with Burr! We have a lot in common. I only found out yesterday when we were talking over coffee! Anyway, we're gonna go get dinner and see how alike we are exactly!"
Am I selling it hard enough? Or too hard?

John visibly tensed and began to sweat, despite trying to keep calm, "Oh. Where are you going to eat?"

"Actually, we set up a table in the courtyard! We have to eat by candlelight because there's no street lights out there! Haha!"

"Sounds..." he shot a glare at Alex, "romantic?"

"Oh, yeah. No. We're friends."

"And only friends?"

"Of course."

"Well. Be seeing you," he turned his attention back to the TV, hiding his rage.

Alex was afraid it didn't quite work but left anyway as to not raise suspicion.
When he arrived at the table, he took in the setting sun and the red and white checkered tablecloth with three candles lit upon it. The plates had already been set and they were to have wine. He wanted it to be as romantic as possible. All for you.

Aaron received the "go" text from Alex and strolled out of his dorm which happened to be down the hall from Alex and John's.

"Oh boy! Going to meet up with Alexander so we can talk about how alike we are!" He shot off in a robot voice. You'd think theatre would be kinder to them.

John muted the TV and listened intently.

"Yes! I am going down to the courtyard right now! To meet Alexander! Hamilton! It might as well be a date!"

Aaron's last words caused John to bolt upright and switch the TV off. He promised they were just friends.
He grabbed a knife from the kitchen after he donned a black hoodie and folded the hood over his head. He placed his back on the door and one hand on the handle, listening.

"I better get going. He is waiting for me," after Aaron's footsteps retreated down the hall, John swung the door open and didn't bother locking it. He just ran down the hall and crept down the stairs to stay close to Aaron. But not too close.

Aaron was absolutely covered in nervous sweat.
He texted Alex: he's totally following me. I hear his ragged breathing behind me.
Alex shot back quickly: how close behind you?! Do you need to run?! I am worried now!!!
Aaron: not that close. He's stalking. I am not turning around tho. I've no idea why he's breathing like that
Alex: I have some idea. Just keep your head up and keep walking. But forreal, RUN IF HE GETS TOO CLOSE

Aaron read the last text and pocketed his phone with a huge gulp. He inhaled through his nose and exhaled through his mouth and focused only on his steps and John's heavy breathing. He measured the distance by John's breath and kept himself however far away he needed to be. He made it to the courtyard turn as the final peaks of the sun went down.
Before he stepped around the corner into Alex's view, a hand gripped the back of his collar and yanked him backwards. He stumbled onto the ground and immediately threw his gaze upwards. John stood over him, holding a finger to his lips. Aaron was too frightened to even move, let alone speak.
