Note: I am so sorry for how long it has been taking me to update! I'm currently in my senior year of college and things have just been getting so crazy, but there is no excuse for how long it took me! I am going to make you guys a promise that I will be posting at least every two weeks from now on because I really do love this story and want to finish it. Also, I'm thinking of writing another teacher/student one or possibly even a cop one!! Let me know if this would be something you're interested in. Hope you enjoy the chapter!

Chapter Twenty-Two

Today as I'm adjusting the laser on a patient Meg actually talks to me.

She says: "Place it a little higher."

I still need training, it's only my third week on the internship and I'm getting used to the laser machine. Last week, I was feeling ambitious and thought I could handle a patient on my own. Turns out, I forgot to enter the patient's name into the computer before I started, not recording her visit or the time spent on the machine. To top it off, I left the machine running once she left. During my lunch break, I was enjoying a salad that tasted better than usual. There I was, happily stacking all of the lettuce on my fork when Meg came into the break room and went on a rant about everything I had done wrong. So today, when she offers me some guidance without me having to ask, I feel a tiny bit of hope that we can improve our current relationship. If it can even be called that.

I finish adjusting the laser on Mrs. Brooks back and hand her a pillow for her head. "I'll leave the door ajar, just call me if you need anything before we apply the next laser."

I step out and find Meg at the front desk. Her curly hair is in a bun today, with a few strands hanging from the sides. I sit down and look over at her. I'm maybe a couple feet away and I find myself wanting to inch more and more towards her. It's like she doesn't have a single pore. The more I look, the clearer her skin seems to get.

"What?" Meg asks.

"What?" I reply, readjusting myself and looking away.

"You were staring at me."

"You know any good face washes?"

She brings her hand to her cheek and rubs it absentmindedly. "Not really, I just use dove soap."

I push my chair from underneath the desk and stand up. "Mrs. Brooks is calling me."

"I don't hear anything."

"Better safe than sorry, right?"

I go into the room and find Mrs. Brooks starting to doze off. She jumps up slightly, trying her best not to move the laser. I apologize for disrupting her and start heading out.

"Can you actually help me with my pillow. Fold it in half please?" I slowly take the pillow from her and fold it before tucking it back under. The laser shifted slightly so I put it back in the correct location. "Thank you."

"No problem, let me know if you need anything."

I walk back out and decide to head to the bathroom instead. I put the lid down and sit down on the toilet. I plan on staying here until someone tries to come in. Sitting up front with Meg was just awkward. We couldn't make conversation because the real conversation that we needed to have was being avoided. I probably was the one who was supposed to bring it up since I'm the one who did the awful thing. The person with the clean conscience doesn't really need to say anything at all.

After ten minutes, I decide to go back to the front and fill out paperwork for incoming patients. Meg was in the back cleaning another exam room for her two o'clock appointment. The pictures on her desk were mainly of her family. Her little sister looked like a miniature version of her, but with blonde hair. There were no pictures of any guy other than her father. I wondered if she ever met anyone after Davis. They had been together for seven years. I imagine she couldn't jump right back two months after they broke up. Not after Davis. I've only had a couple months with him, and if we ended things right now, I knew I couldn't bounce back either. I couldn't imagine seven years with him and then the rest without him.
