Note: Sorry for the short and uneventful chapter! I'm not a big fan of this one, but to make it up to you, the next one will definitely be a lot more eventful! (: Thank you for the continued support despite my horrible timing with updates, and thank you to every single one of you for the 2000+ followers! I never imagined any of this.
Chapter Seventeen
Davis is staring at me with unadulterated fear in his bright hazel eyes. His hands grip his steering wheel and he forces a smile as Max waves goodbye to him and runs to the house. Just an hour ago he suggested that telling my parents was necessary and should happen soon, but now that it was relevant and right in front of him, he wanted to run.
"What's wrong big man? Are you afraid of a middle aged couple?" I ask as I lean against the passenger door of his car.
"Oh and you aren't? Where did this burst of confidence come from?"
I shrug my shoulder and ignore the ringing in my ears. One of us had to look like we were confident and put together, and since they were my parents and I didn't have to impress them considering they were stuck with me either way, that person had to me. Besides, Davis was a complete mess. I wasn't sure he'd be able to put a coherent sentence together once he sat down in front of both of my parents.
"Come on. Remember what you used to tell me when I'd complain about bleachers?" I ask with a smile on my face, "You wisely said, 'Pain is only temporary, Iris. Get over it.'"
He stares at me blankly, "That doesn't help."
"Oh, I know it doesn't."
He sighs and takes his keys out of the car. I smile and wait patiently for him on the other side of the it. This would be extremely amusing until we were actually facing them, then it was going to be ugly and I'd have to hold my breath the entire time. I hadn't even informed them that I was no longer interested in Austin. Well, if things go horribly wrong, I just hope that Davis can run faster than my dad can reach for him.
"Look don't worry," I whisper as he takes his shoes off in the hallway, "my mom loves you. My dad, he doesn't think you're a bad guy. If you're trying to get on his good side, just remember he's a Liverpool fan."
Davis gives me a disgusted and fearful look, and I laugh because I know exactly what he is thinking. My dad was a Liverpool fan, and Davis liked Manchester United. The rivalry between the two was strong. Davis had no chance.
"Not funny. I'm a dead man."
We walk into the house and I hear my mom moving things around in the kitchen. I set my stuff down on the dining room table and announce that Davis came inside. Almost immediately, my mom peaks her head from the kitchen to smile and welcome him into her home. My dad gets up from the couch and walks over to shake Davis' hand. I smile when I notice the shaky smile Davis gives and the constant motion of him wiping his hands on his jeans.
Truthfully, I felt a little bad for him. Davis was always calm and collected, at least off the soccer field and around other individuals. I rarely saw him exhibit behavior that lacked conviction. We weren't even on the topic of us yet, and I could see the gears in his mind calling it quits and running for dear life.
"I'm so surprised to see you here Tyler. Surely I thought once Iris graduated, we'd see less of you."
You and I both, mom. I had written off Davis as soon as I saw him disappearing in my rearview mirror. Although he had been a major part of my life for four years, he had also been a person I viewed as a hindrance. Our personalities clashed, and we wasted our breaths arguing more than anything.
