Windtail's paws sunk into the mud. He tried to steady himself. He'd gone a long way. And it would be a long way back. Fireflaw fell to his paws and Darkfrost's eyes hardened. "We have to make it back to River Clan. Dawnstar will be wondering what's taking us so long." Darkfrost murmured, picking up the pace.
Fireflaw found himself to his paws again and hurried after the two cats. He closed his eyes and wished everything was alright. "Fireflaw might be hungry." Windtail suggested staring at Fireflaw's paws. His words broke Fireflaw from his trance. He looked up and nodded towards Windtail.
"I think I smell rabbit." Darkfrost purred, taking off in a sprint towards a small rabbit hopping along. There was a long length of silence then a howl. "I got it!" Darkfrost yowled and padded back towards his clanmates. He dropped it at his paws and Fireflaw nodded gratefully towards him.
The three cats bent down and shared their meal. Windtail's tail thickened. His ears pricked up and a hiss formed in the back of his throat. "I smell dog. We better get going." Windtail jumped to his paws and turned around, making a wild run for it. Fireflaw and Darkfrost tried to keep up the pace and darted after their medicine cat.
Seconds past before Fireflaw started to complain. "Are we there yet?" His paws padded against the forest floor.
Darkfrost rolled his eyes and his eyes slanted. "Not nearly."
"And I still smell dog." Wintail added stretching out his muzzle towards the horrid stench.
A deep howl sounded from the mountains. Windtail stepped forward an inch. "Mountain cats."
