Dawnstar closed her eyes and her breathing became uneven. Her deputy towered over her and his eyes were clouded with pain.  The clan would lose their leader if Windtail didn't make it back in time.

"He won't make it in time." Dawnstar whispered.  Foxtail flicked his tail. He knew this were true. Yet, he wasn't ready to admit it.  Dawnstar drew in a gulp of air and coughed it back out. Her fur trembled and she hadn't ate in days.

"You must eat something." Shadowfeather muttered, streaking her paws against the muddy ground.

"No. That'll make it worse." Foxtail argued.

"Then she'll die quickly." Shadowfeather purred dropping to her paws. "I don't see why she can't try." Shadowfeather added before leaving the den and reappearing with a small mouse. She nuzzled her leader's side and pushed the small mouse forward.

"Thank you." Dawnstar flicked her tail slowly and bent down to eat the mouse. She took small cautious bites.  Dawnstar swallowed them. Every few seconds looking up at the two cats. "It seems to be alright." Dawnstar gulped down the bites and spoke.

"That's good." Foxtail purred.

"And you wanted to let her starve." Shadowfeather retorted backing up a few paces from him. Foxtail didn't respond. His gaze only followed to an icy glare towards the Shadowfeather. She whipped her tail backwards in agreement.

"This isn't a time to be fighting." Dawnstar croaked.  Her voice crackled and she drew in her last and final breath.

"Dawnstar?" Shadowfeather muttered. "Dawnstar!" She shouted, racing to her leader's side. Shadowfeather raised her head and her voice crackled. "She's dead."
