Windtail slanted his eyes and padded quietly through the dark mountains. Fireflaw and Darkfrost followed. Windtail stopped in his tracks and sniffed the air. His ears pricked up and he turned to face the others. "I smell mountain lion." His whiskers jolted backwards.

"We must stay within the valley if you want to avoid them." Fireflaw mewed. His fur stood up and his thoughts were clouded.

"Yes yes." Windtail commented as he slinked through the small opening. "There's light ahead." He promised.

"I see it." Darkfrost yowled, darting forward. They had been traveling in this dense cold weather for more than a few hours. Their paws ached and their whiskers were nearly frozen.  When the three cats had made their way from the dark mountains they stood above a small pond.

"Drink while you can. We won't find much food or water around here. This is a gift." Windtail purred, leaning down to take a sip. "I was thirsty, indeed." Windtail added before dropping to his paws.

"Down." Windtail ordered quietly. The cats obeyed.  A small mountain lion lurked above. His hungry growl alarmed Darkfrost.

"Stay down. Stay quiet." Fireflaw hushed quietly.

"That wasn't quiet enough." Darkfrost snapped. He could feel the preditor's icy glare on his pelt.

"Stay down. Don't make a sound." Windtail winced. His purr was loud enough to startle the mountain  lion. His growl became close. Fireflaw snapped his head around and his eye's widened.

The three cats were staring up at death.
