Flashback

Beverly marsh sat in a bathroom stall at her high school. She had just run in after seeing a couple of the bullies in the school walking her way.

She looked down at her shaking hands as she tried to slow her breath down.

It's okay she thought to herself. That's when she heard the door open followed by girls voices.

Through the crack in the bathroom stall the red haired girl saw three juniors standing in front of the mirror fixing their hair.

"God, Did you see that girl who walked into our English class the other day?" One of the girls said.

"Oh yeah! That ginger one"  one girl reapplying her makeup replied and Beverlys eyes went wide. Bev remembered walking into the wrong class yesterday, and standing there awkwardly for a minute before leaving.

"Did you see the way she looked? That girl needs to learn how to take a shower," one of the girls said and the two others burst into laughter. Beverly threw her hand up to her mouth, stifling a sob.

"God, that girl has problems, there have been too many rumors about her," another girl giggled out.

"Oh yeah! Like that one of her and the teacher!" Another girl said while laughing. The three left Beverly in tears that she was holding back.

She slowly stood up as her legs shook under her weight and opened the stall door. She walked to the sinks and ran her hands under hot water.

She looked up.

The girl was a mess. Her hair was in a lazy ponytail and was frizzy and sticking up in some places. Her eyes were puffy and red and tears streaked down her dirty face. Her clothes looked like rags. She sighed.

Beverly knew the rumors about her, knew what people thought about her. But hearing it from someone right in front of her eyes really hurt. She hated the way she looked, but she didn't need other people telling her.

Bev stormed out of the bathroom and was walking out of the school when Bill caught sight of her. He rushed to meet her before she left the front doors.

"B-Bev!" He shouted as he tapped her shoulder. She turned around and he looked at her with concerned eyes.

"A-are you oh-oh-okay?" He asked and she looked at the floor.

"Fine." She said through clenched teeth. He placed his hand on her shoulder which sent shocks through the girl.

"Hey, du-du-don't cry," he said in a calm voice. Beverly loved the way his voice sounded. "Let's g-go somewhere." He said and he picked up his bookbag and walked with her outside the school, hand wrapped around her shoulders.

The two walked to bills house and headed to his backyard. The October breeze brushed through Beverlys knotted hair as the two laid down in the grass.

"Wu-wu-what happened?" He asked and she looked up at the cloudy sky.

"Nothing bill. Just the same old rumors." She said and he sighed. He didn't know why so many people spread rumors about the beautiful girl. Maybe it's cause they were jealous.

"I'm suh-suh-sorry." He said and Bev looked back at him and smiled.

"It's not your fault big bill."

After a couple hours Beverly stood up and told Bill she had to start heading home. She stood in front of him awkwardly before turning and leaving. Beverly wanted to hold his hand so badly. She wanted to kiss him and run her hand through his hair. But she was afraid that he didn't like her back.

A few years back the two kissed. But nothing followed the kiss. Beverly thought about Bill the whole way home.

Once she got home she unlocked the door with the spare key kept under the front door mat and walked inside. Her dad stood on the other side of the door with his arms crossed.

"Where have you been?" He spat at the girl, Beverly stepped back from the man.

"I was just hanging out with friends daddy, " she said in almost a whisper, her legs started to shake.

"Why were you late?!" He shouted and the girl took another step back.

"I just lost track of time, I'm sorry." She said in an almost whisper again.

"Speak up!" He shouted and at that moment he placed his hand on her arm and brought her face to his. "Don't lie to me." He spat.

"I'm not!" She shouted and the man let go of her arm. She rubbed the place he was holding, it was bright red.

"You're suppose to be home by 5! It's 630!" He yelled as he slammed his hand on the table next to him. Beverly jumped back at the sound.

"I'm sorry daddy!" The girl yelled back.

The man then ran to her and placed his hand on her shoulder. Then with all the force he had he pushed her to the ground, banging her head into the door. Bev let a sob escape her lips.

"Don't ever let this happen again bevvy." He said and she nodded. The girl then stood up shakily. "Say it."

"It won't happen again." Beverly said through clenched teeth as she walked-ran up the stairs. The man turned around towards the stairs and reached out for the girl. Almost missing her he grabbed a handful of her hair and pulled back. Beverly howled in pain.

"Don't use attitude with me!" He shouted and Beverly started slapping the hand that held her hair. "Stop it!" He shouted and he dropped the handful of hair, Beverly fell down.

Tears now spilling out of her eyes she quickly whispered "I'm sorry" and ran up the stairs, heading to the only room with a lock, the bathroom.

She locked the door and dropped to the ground. Sobs racking from her chest.

She stayed like this for what felt like an hour. She couldn't stand her father, it felt like everyday he got more mad. Everyday he got more violent.

She stood up as she rubbed the back of her head. It was throbbing.

Looking in the mirror Beverly hated what she saw. She hated the acne that dotted her face. Hated her eyes that were always tearing up. Hated her chubby face that never thinned out. Hated her dirty hair that never looked like the rest of the girls hair in her class.

Beverly started crying again upon seeing herself. She started replaying what the girls said about her in the bathroom.

As the memory replayed in her mind the girl ran her finger through her hair. Tears filling up her eyes again.

Looking down at her fathers bathroom stuff she saw a pair of scissors. She reached for them and held them up to a lock of her hair.

The image of her father reaching out and grabbing her hair replayed in her mind and she closed her hand on the scissors, cutting off a big chunk of hair

She continued to do this with clumps of her hair as tears blurred her vision. The girl saw lock of hair after the next fall to the ground around her. By the time she was done her hair was ear length and horribly uneven.

The girl collapsed to the floor and screamed. She then sobbed louder than ever, she heard her father rush to the door and knock loudly. But the girl ignored him and kept sobbing, clutching her knees.

She couldn't take it. Couldn't take any of it. Hearing her fathers voice on the other side of that door only made it worse.

After a while of her sobbing on the floor and her father yelling, he called the hospital to help. They arrived within minutes and busted open the door to see a girl curled up on the floor surrounded by her own beautiful orange hair. They picked her up and drove her away from her house.

That night Beverly marsh arrived at Derry mental institution.
