-----------------------------------

Darkness and the cold surrounds the black colt laying on the soft white sand. The nicker of his mother comforts him. He lies closer to her warmth and savouring her smell of crushed pines. The wind roars around them and the rain buckets down. But the rocky overhang shelters them.

As he try's to sleep it doesn't come, He is restless and the wild storm that rages outside calls out to him. He wants to run and dance in its wild wind. Spiritus is his name, his mother named him after the wind in which he was born. Spiritus is wind in latin, where long ago his ancestors were bought to Latin and so the names stuck with a Latin meaning. With his night black coat and mane his mother knew He is going to be hunted just like she was. Hunted for their beauty. She calls him Spiritus, for he will have to be as swift, fast, strong spirited and silent as the wind.

"Spiritus" she nickers, "fall asleep, I will not leave your side. Block at the wind and it's temptations"

He nods his head slightly and closes his eyes and lay his head on the soft sand.

As the morning sun rises and birds sing their song and the sky shines a deep red and orange. The storm has well blew over and it was another day in the mountains. Luna nudges her new born colt softly.

"Wakie wakie little one, big day ahead of us, we must get back to the protection of our herd. You'll will meet your mighty father Maximus" Luna nickers

He rises slowly, gaining the balance on his long legs. He was 5 days old and was still learning. They set off a brisk trot, He stays as close to his mothers side as possible, but He can't help but look at all the bush creatures. As they continue on, Luna starts teaching him the first things of the bush.

How to keep quiet and leave no track. Where to find food and water.

Not long and the sun dies down, they find shelter under a big gumtree with long dropping branches to protect them from unseen eyes. It was a dangerous place for a mare and foal to be alone. Spiritus snuggles up to Luna as he can barely see her now.

"Spiritus, use your coat whenever in trouble the night will always be their to guide you" she says softly. She was right He was completely invisible, the darkness was his friend.
