NERV FILE 10

  May 31- (it passed midnight)

I looked up to see my beloved Unit 13 holding me in the palm of its hand. But how? It looked down at me. I don't know how or why, but I could feel it's emotions. It's not a feeling I can easily explain. It wasn't yet fully awakened, but it was on its way. It was happy that it had caught me, saving my life. It was then that I knew for sure there was no pilot in Unit 13. By its own volition, it had broken its restraints and saved me. I noticed it still had a good-sized hole where the sword had went in. My EVA then set me on the ground, and shut down. It fell next to Unit 002, so that they laid next to each other. Asuka!

I ran over to Unit 002's pilot pod and hit the emergency manual ejection switch. The pod didn't eject out as much as it fell. I opened the pod and took Asuka out of the LCL. She was breathing. She would be okay. She would be okay. She would be okay...

May 31- (later)

I'm in a room with commander Ikari, Misato, Rei, Shinji, Asuka, and now Mari. I stood before them. It's a lot like a court hearing. Commander Ikari is the judge, and everybody else is the jury. I'm the defendant and my past actions are the prosecution.

Gendo: Kane Shinari, do you deny that you showed a display of power that is similar, and in many cases, identical to the powers of the angels?

Me: No sir, I do not.

Gendo: Do you deny that you could be considered an angel?

Me: I deny that I could correctly and justly be considered an angel.

Gendo: And do you deny that you do not possess complete control over said abilities?

Me: Yes, I do.

Gendo: What proof do you have?

Me: Everybody in this base is still alive.

Gendo: You are in no position to make threats.

Me: You do not understand. You saw what I could do. I could have leveled this whole city, NERV included. Despite the origins of my newfound power, I can use it at my own free will, as you saw when I chose to save your lives. I mentally overpowered the angelic influence in my mind to save us all.

Gendo: How do we know you won't loose it again and endanger a mission?

Me: Because it took a lot to push me to the edge like that. While I'm on that topic, however, I would like my car back now. Pretty please?

Gendo: Your vehicle is being withheld, along with the remainder of your possessions depending on the outcome of this hearing.

Me: Alright.

Gendo: I'm not sure I can risk keeping you on as a pilot.

Me: So you want to put somebody else in Unit 13? Good luck with that. You saw what happened. It has begun to awaken for me, and it has bonded with me, and I with it. You cannot give it a new pilot.

Gendo: Hmm... does anyone else have anything to add?

Mari: Yes. He saved our lives with those abilities. He doesn't deserve to be treated like a monster or a freak. He should be treated like a hero.

Gendo: Anyone else?

Misato: I've known Kane for 8 years. He may not always make the best choices, but he has a true heart. I would entrust my own life to him. I already owe him it.

Gendo: Noted. Is that it?

Shinji: He showed me that I can be stronger. He gave me the push I needed to start becoming a better EVA pilot, and I'm well on my way.
