"Hey, Fury wants you to go to him," Natasha said, peeking into Steve's room. She smiled as Steve came over and kissed the top of her head. It's been just a few weeks since they started dating, but they were cozying up pretty quick.
"Wonder what he wants," Steve said in his deep voice. Natasha shrugged, and linked her arm around his as they walked to Nick Fury's office.
Once at Fury's office, Natasha turned around to look at Steve. She sighed.
"Well, I don't know what Fury wants, but have a good time in there," she said, her green eyes trained on him. "Stop by my room later." She watched as Steve went in, then pressed her ear on the door as soon as it closed. Fury doesn't usually hide anything from me...
"Thanks for coming," Fury said as Steve entered the room. He closed the door behind him and gave Fury a curt nod.
"Yeah, what do you want?" Steve asked. He was feeling a bit impatient today, since this week was the last week before he was going to be sent to missions again. Nick Fury sighed. Steve took this as a signed and softened his expression.
"Look - I'm sorry for wasting your time, but I just wanted to say thank you for protecting Natasha. I told you to protect her that day when you and Natasha came in for help with rescuing your comrades from the underwater prison, and you did a very good job doing so," Fury replied, looking resigned.
At this moment, Natasha let out a small gasp. She let her thoughts process inside her mind. Steve... he was protecting me... only because Fury told him to? Does Steve really think he could toy with my feelings like that? Her face when from shock, to realization, to anger.
Then, without stopping to listen to the rest of the conversation going on in the room, Natasha briskly walked back to her room.
Meanwhile, in Fury's office, Steve was expressing his anger to Fury.
"I told you before - Natasha is perfectly capable of protecting herself. She's a strong woman. For God's sake - she's arguably the deadliest assassin on Earth!" Steve was practically yelling at this point. He clenched his jaw, and fixed his steely eyes on Fury's one.
"I saved Natasha, only because I loved her, not because you ordered me to," he said, in a dangerously calm voice. "And I want you stop talking to me about that from now on." With that, he spun on his heel, and left, slamming the door behind him.
What is wrong with him? Steve thought as he jogged to Natasha's room. He opened the door, expecting a warm welcome, but instead Natasha was facing away with her arms crossed.
"Get out," she said, in that calm voice she sometimes uses when she's angry. Steve knit his eyebrows, frowning.
"It - it's me, Steve," He stammered, taken aback by Natasha's sudden anger.
"Yeah, I know, so get out." Her voice shook as she replied. Steve stood there, confused. She was fine a few minutes ago...
Then it dawned on him. The conversation with Fury. She must have overheard part of the conversation and left because it upset her.
"Look, Nat. It wasn't like that. Yes, Fury did give me orders to protect you, but you don't get it. I told him that you don't need protection from me and that - " Steve stopped as Natasha whirled around. Her face was stained with tears, and her green eyes burned through him. Steve was surprised. Natasha rarely cried, and when she did, it was almost never in front of other people.
"I didn't need protection from you? Is it because I was trained to be a killing machine, because I am secretly evil inside? You can be honest with me, Steve. You told me that you don't care who I was back then, that my past doesn't define me. But now you're saying I don't need saving?" She raised her voice and scoffed. She shook her head.
Steve sighed. Natasha just didn't get it.
"Nat, I - you don't understand. I told him that because I know how strong you are, Nat. You're the strongest woman I know. And you know that I only saved you at the underwater prison because I worried as heck and because I love you."
"That's bullsh*t! Bullsh*t!" Natasha yelled. Steve clenched his jaw and muttered "language" under his breath. He was getting more and more impatient.
"Maybe I meant it! Or maybe I didn't! You can interpret it whichever way you want! But maybe you should think about how you shouldn't have been eavesdropping in the first place!" He shouted. The two stared at each other. And for the first time, the blue in Steve's eyes were icy while looking at Natasha, and he green in Natasha's eyes were blazing as she looked at Steve.
"Get out," Natasha said quietly, glaring at Steve. Steve finally obeyed, and when he did, Natasha shut the door on him.
