No! No! No! No!
How could I have been so stupid?!
I sat in the chair and stared at the stack of papers that were before me on the desk. My hand had unconsciously made its way to my head where it was now pulling at the strands of my hair.
You've messed up big time Kate, my subconscious shook her head at me, like I didn't know that! She just had to remind me, didn't she? What had I gotten myself into this time?
Section 13 - Clause 2
All employees of the Remora Business and Shipping Corporation, whether working at the Remora house or any of the other nine companies of the Remora Corporation, are under the C.E.O.'s employment...
Section 16 - Clause 9
The CEO has the power to change the position of any of the employees working at any of the companies of his corporation...
Section 16 - Clause 10
The CEO also has the authority to fire any of the employees or to punish them as he sees fit if they fail to follow any of the clauses outlined in the contract...
I read, read and continued reading. So many things were outlined in the contract and none of them could help me so far. Why hadn't I read the stupid contract, I wondered with a groan. And just when I thought that things couldn't possibly get any worse, guess what happened?...things got a lot worse.
Section 24 - Clauses 13
If an employee wants to terminate his work time at any of the Remora companies, he has to work a six months period before he can leave unless he is fired or allowed to leave by his employer. However, if the employer does not see it fit for the employee to leave, he has to work the six months and cannot fail in his work duties as that will result in no pay. Also, the employee cannot do anything to damage the company or harm it of any sort as this will result in a court sentence which will be worse. than. jail.
Somehow I just knew that Mr. Remora had made sure that whoever typed this contract had written that last part specifically.
I sighed softly and massaged my temples quietly. I didn't dare look behind me because I could already feel his breath on my neck as he breathed down it. I continued reading, going through clause after clause and section after section. There had to be something in here that could help me, but knowing him he wouldn't leave a single tear in the piece of cloth.
I was just about to give up when my eyes caught something. It was all the way to the last of the contract, probably so that no one would notice it since they wouldn't want to read so far into the 100-page contract!
Section 35 - Claus 17
However, if an employee does not want to work the extra six months, depending on the position he had been working at the company, the salary he would've received for the six months can be paid as a fine allowing the employee his layoff/dismissal...
Yes! This was it! This was my chance out, I thought as I finally stood up after sitting for two hours and turned to a smug Mr. Remora. I raised an eyebrow.
"Have you finally agreed that I am indeed correct and that you have no choice but to work for me?" he asked making me roll my eyes.
"As a matter of fact Mr. Remora, no. I believe you can recall Section 35, Claus 17?" I asked slowly, crossing my arms before me as I stared at his face which immediately lost its smugness and turned cold and hard...well that was before it turned back to its previous smugness. What the?
