the end

Locus had never been one to attend funerals.

During the Great War, he had seen many of his brothers die on the battlefield. There was the split second where his heart would send a pang throughout his whole body as he watched his fellow soldier cripple to the ground and bleed. Locus knew you couldn't take long to grief in the middle of a battle, or you would end up just like them.

He had thought that because of the war he had become buffered, maybe even numb, to death.

But... As he stood at the foot of a tiny grave, Locus realized that no human being could ever be capable of ignoring the feeling of loss.

The sun was shining down on his back, and under its glare the desert was bright and cheerful. It was as if the weather was mocking him... Or mocking her. It wanted to show Locus that the world would go on without her. Without Bella.

It shouldn't.

Everything should be as grey and stormy and depressing as his emotions. It should be cold and damp, without a light breeze or the chittering of animals. Until then, the world would not know the true absence of her life.

He was standing alone, but surrounded by multiple bodies six feet under. She was one of the strong ones; one of the few who made it past the first week without clean air, the second week without clean water, and the third week without bread rations.

Bella died the night that Liz left the camp. He entered his love's tent with an apology on his mind but was shocked to see the place empty and vacant. He searched the camp for her but was unsuccessful to find Liz. And this time... She didn't leave a note.

It was as if the world was shattering from the inside out. Just like Locus' heart. He wondered if maybe he was the one who actually died... and now, this was his own personal hell.

No little girl should ever have to plan her own funeral. But, while draped across Locus' lap, she smiled as she described it. A dandelion sitting on her, her hair brushed and down by her shoulders, and her favorite yellow dress covering her fragile body.

Bella's grave was the only one that had flowers. A single dandelion was now strewn across the dirt and pebbles, and Locus' hand shook as he laid it down. She had gotten what she wanted. A drop landed on the mound, sending a deeper color spreading into the sand.

Locus crinkled his brow, and the drops continued. Then, his lungs started to ache. He was heaving now. Tears, he thought, of course. He must've stood there for hours, because now the back of his neck burned... And, the inside of his chest burned.

His soul was unwilling to acknowledge the finality of her death.

He had hope that maybe he would wake up tomorrow and be able to see her smiling face or her raggedy braids. He had hope that maybe he would finish his patrol for the day and still have time to wash her favorite dress. He had hope that he would save Bella from her illness.

But, that hope was empty. That hope was hopeless.

Locus was saying goodbye although she was gone already. He would never look upon her face again or feel her tight embrace. He would never see the warmth in her eyes. He would never be surrounded by her love.

Locus was never a religious person. But, while standing over her grave, he hoped for an afterlife. He hoped that she would see her parents again. He hoped that she would find the truth to their murder. He hoped that she was happy and healthy and loved... And, at peace.

He hoped that he would find that, too... And, he hoped that she would be right next to him along the way.
