He got her to a nearby camp they had ensured for immediate health services. They said something about loss of blood, multiple fractures, concussion. All I could understand was she wasn’t okay. I rushed them to direct me to a proper hospital.

Here in this unknown country, I was like a lost bird. I couldn’t help but think what if. I was forcing myself really hard to not, but what if, she.. no I can’t.

He forced himself to not allow his thoughts to stray. He did all his registrations, his and his wife’s, and was ready to take her to the hospital. He told the ambulance driver to get her to the best hospital in town that money wasn’t a problem, he would pay every thing he owned to get her back to him

The doctors took her in emergency care, and began evaluating her. They asked me to wait outside. Pushing in several needles into her at once. I was very very afraid. Now that I wasn’t even allowed to hold her hand, how was I to keep myself stable.

“Sir, patient has a concussion probably. But she is also unconscious. If it only is a concussion, she’d get better with time. But to be sure a MRI would be perfect. And we have started treating her for everything else. She’d be fine with time we think.” The doctor said.

And I breathed. She would be fine. It would be okay, they asked me a few formalities, but the only thing I could think of was “SHE WOULD BE FINE.” I signed everything, not even blinking once.

Taking her to MRI ROOM, in that claustrophobia inducing machine, I was getting scared. The what ifs returned. What if it wasn’t only a concussion. What if they were wrong? And the big What if. The thought which I wasn’t allowing my mind to complete. But the fear which lurked my subconscious, which threatened it’s very existence.

The doctors explained that there were no internal injuries. The impact of the fall, and given it was a airplane crash, but the staff of the aircraft was alert, they executed the evacuation before a major damage could occur, was the reason, death toll wasn’t as much. There was some swelling in her brain, which would subside with time. Her fractures were splinter.  Her broken skin was sutured.

Rest could only be said, when she actually woke up. They couldn’t predict what will be her state after she regained consciousness. If there is a lasting damage, or how long would she take to actually wake up. The doctors couldn’t say.

I called up back home. Telling them of the proceedings. They insisted on coming back. I explained we would be back as soon as possible. But I wouldn’t risk travelling, not when she is unconscious. Elders of the house were doing all they could, prayers, contacts.

But there was only so much they could do, when she wasn’t responding.

Days passed.. rolling into weeks. She was the same. Healing. My patience wore thin every passing day. Our family had come down to this town, in the middle of no where. They tried their best to get me off her bedside. But the best I could take myself was to the washroom inside her room.

I tried everything I could. I talked to her full day. But seeing her still form, I couldn’t help but loose the only thing that I had. HOPE.

KARTIK GOENKA was in the pool of hopelessness. Where would the life take him to?
