Chapter 24: First Evaluation

"Why do I need to move to the dorm? I have my own house near here" I say to PD-nim and he sits in his cushioned seat.

"We need to manage time. During your trainee period, time management is very important" He said with his hand under his chin looking to each of us.

"Will she stays in the same dorm with us?" Nayeon sunbae from TWICE asks him. He looks at her and laughs. What the heck does that laugh mean?!

"Nope. Don't forget. She's just a trainee and you guys are the idols. She can stay at Somi's. Please tell her that I ask her to show Haneul around the dorm later," With that, he stands up from his seat and take his coat. He talks with the woman from before and we bow at him for the last time. The woman earlier asks TWICE to leave me with her. She leads me to a room which is quite noisy. She opens the door for me and they all become quiet.

"Oh, there you are Haneul. I thought you are missing just now" Somi says to me as soon as she sees me. "Come here, you can have a little chit-chat with us. Don't be shy" She shows me a seat next to her and asks me to sit. I sit and I can feel all eyes one me.

"Oh, you're wearing the same bracelet as Hyunjin," One of the trainee look at my hands and Hyunjin's. "Does this mean anything?" The girl ask again and I look at Hyunjin. He looks like he doesn't care.

"No way right. Now now let's practice something. Can you sing Haneul?" Somi asks me and I freeze.

"Uhm, yes. Why?" I ask and everyone looks at me and as if they are waiting for me to sing. I cough and hums a few notes before singing to Hwang Chi-Yeul sunbae, A Daily Song. I close my eyes as I sing to them. After singing a verse from that song, I can't hear anything as if they are all silent. I slowly open my eyes and they immediately clap their hands for me.

"What a nice voice Haneul!" Somi exclaims excitedly and I smile at them.

"You have a nice smile too!" One of the boys shout to me.

"Yaa! I don't get paid for you to play around!" A man suddenly barges in and all of them stand up and bow to him. "You! Why are you here? You shouldn't be with them" He pulls my arm and I can see Hyunjin stands up with a slightly mad face. He sees me and then sits back. I follow that man to a room full of music equipments.

"So guys, this is your composing room. We have many partition that will devide you into groups for your first mission" He explains to us about our task and about some of the equipments. "If you feels like you have an idea and you don't know where to pour them, just come to this room and make the magic happens" We all nod and then he suddenly points to me. "You, what is your name?" He asks while pointing to me.

"My name is Song Haneul." I answer and he nods.

"I heard that the only girl here got a breath taking skills. I need to see. Can you make a few rhythm for me?" I nod and sit in front of the computer. I hit some of the drum buttons on the pad and click some features on the computer. This composing equipment have got some jam! "How long will you take huh?" The guy from before talk to me.

"Just make a 15 seconds countdown for me" I turn my head to him and wink at them. I click some more sound filters at the computer and wallah!

I hand him a headphone and hit the play button. I made a 30 seconds rhythm for him. He looks fine in the beginning but starts to open his eyes bigger as he listen to it. "You're my favourite one here! Do you have any song you've made before?" I take out a CD from my clutch and give it to him politely.  He inserts it and click something on the computer and put back his headphone on.

He hears my music in awe. He always like "wow" "no way" and then laughs alone.

"Is she that good?" A boy with blonde hair suddenly speaks. The guy put down his headphones and look at the blonde boy.

"Please give me your song if you have a better suggestion" He puts his palm in front of the boy's face and they boy give him a pendrive.

"Click on the song number 5" The boy says to the man as he plug in the pendrive to the computer.

"So this is your fifth song? I can tell already why she is way better than you" He tells him with a smirk and the boy looks at me, unhappy. I'm not here to search for enemy. The guy listens to his song with a closed eyes. He then pauses the song. Halfway.

"Thank you. I think I don't need to hear any more," The guy stands up and comes out from the recording room.

"Wait! That's just half of the song!" The boy from before runs after him.

"You should value someone's work only after you listen to their work till the end," I say in a low voice and he laughs.

"I don't need to hear such an invaluable song," The guy looks at me and then to the other boys. "You're such a brave girl. We need you in this industry. Make sure to do your best during your final assignment at the end of the summer break." He looks at me one more time and picks up something from his pocket.

He gives me a bussiness card. It's written Yoon Jong Shin, songwriter and composer. "Make sure to give me a call if JYP doesn't want you," He winks at me. "And btw, I'm not your trainer, I just want to know what's JYP's taste." He says for the last time and exits the room. We all then look at each other in silence.

"Oh hey, my name is Shin Won, Park Shinwon and I will be your composing trainer for the rest of your time here. Anything you want to ask or everything you want to know, just ask me, me and only me," A woman with a hat comes into our room without knocking.

"Hmm, shouldn't you at least knock?" A boy I believe his name is Gye Hun says.

The woman called 'Shinwon' laughs and smiles at him.

"I would never say that if I were you," She says with a smirk.

Gye Hun was about to say something again, "minus 10 points" but she immediately says in that English. "So now, let's hear what you've prepared" She claps her hand and we all quickly give our cds and pendrives to her. She take it one by one and insert it on the computer. It starts from the left to right and that means I will be evaluate last.

"Hyunjae-gun, your song is great with the combination of pop songs and EDM. I'm quite impressed. But you still need to improve in volume of each rhythm" She talks to him after playing his song loudly in the recording room.

"Mae Chan-gun, your song contains too much electronic and a not stable combination of guitar sounds and techno. I'm don't quite like it but I'm sure by the end of summer, you're ready to be accepted by any agencies," She talks about Mae Chan, the guy who was evaluated by the guy name Jong Shin.

"Okay next.." She hits the play button and no sound can be heard. "David-ssi, are you sure that you've insert your work in this CD?" She asks with annoyed face and I can see that David is quite nervous and scared since her voice is quite loud like she is angry but the fact  is she's not.

"Next" She insert a pendrive which contains Sung Yoon's work.

"I'm nervous now," He suddenly whispers at me.

"I can hear that. And never be afraid. You just need to have faith in what you do. If you want to work in the music industry, you need to be tough and accept what other people think about you," She finally has a sincere smile on her face. She hears David's song and smiles. "See, your song is good and I don't know what to evaluate more," She laughs and looks at us one by one.

She listens to my song and hums for quite a long time. "I don't know what to say. But comparing to both Hyunjae and Haneul, Haneul is better but never feel satisfy with your work okay. And all of you, if you can't make it now, doesn't mean that you won't improve, so keep working hard alright?" She smiles for the last time and exits the room. "You're dismissed" She shouts from outside and we all take our own cds and pendrives back.

"You did a good job, I agree. Maybe you've had enough passion in yourself. Keep it up! Song Haneul fighting!" David exclaims like a little girl and I pats his head.

"Yaa I'm older than you! I'm 18 okay," He flicks my head and quickly rubs my forehead since he thought he flicked too hard. All of us then go out from the recording room and go to our dorm.
