As I pick up speed on my way to the mouthwatering scent wafting from the cafeteria, I accidentally bump into one of the kids from "Group B", just coming back from their group therapy session. I look up to see Lacey standing there. Lacey is also one of the nice ones, except she can hold a grudge forever. And by forever, I mean even after she's long dead and decomposed, she'll remember. Luckily, I haven't gotten on her bad side yet. I smirk and jokingly ask, "whatcha got today, Lace?"
She sighs like she's got the weight of the world on her shoulders. "I've been sick with pneumonia since this morning. Everytime I cough, it's like I have a rattlesnake in my lungs. And I'm so constantly tired."
"Awww I'm sorry Lace, I'm sure it'll go away soon if you just think hard enough." I try to give her some consolation, since I know it'll be a brand new disease tomorrow. You see, Lacey has been diagnosed with hypochondriasis, which is a psychological disorder which causes the person, in this case Lacey to believe that she has a serious medical disorder based on small things that she has vastly misinterpreted, so as the "symptoms" change and progress, her illness of the day switches as well.
"I don't know, Jazz. This one seems like it's it." She claims. I nod skeptically and we continue on to the lunch (and breakfast, and dinner) room. As we line up behind Kat (the sociopath) Jason comes up to stand beside me.
"What are you doing here?" I snark, still angry at him for tattling at Group.
He raises his eyebrows over his bright, captivating eyes. No! Stop brain! We don't like him anymore, remember? "Don't take that tone with me, Jazz, I was only helping. And I'm here to aid your eating habits, or have you already forgotten?"
My tone turns pleading. "Can't you just not do that? I mean c'mon, we both know I don't have trouble eating! That was your and Kade's fault! I promise that I'll eat it all, but you don't have to be a stalker and watch me do it."
He rubs his temples as if fed up. "Jazz, stop arguing and just give me your tray."
"But the bowls too hot to only hold in my hands." I whine.
"I'm going to be the one serving you." He explains, exasperated.
"Well I guess that makes sense, but I'm going to serve myself, so it's useless to give it to you." He finally gives up, or so I thought. As we move up in line to the serving point, Jason takes the initiative to tell the cook just how much I want. It amounted up to two bowls. I mean, sure, I'm a pig in my own right but I'm saving all that precious stomach space for the chocolate pudding dessert! I clear my throat as we head back toward the tables where Kade, Fae, Lacey, Hash and Gabriel were already seated. "You know, I really can't eat that much." He nods non committedly as I glare at the side of his head. Great. He's in his stubborn "I can make the world a better place, one person at a time" mood. He really should toss that type of thinking out of the top window of a 5 billion story building. I try again. "Is one of those bowls for you?"
"You're a growing girl, Jazz, so you will eat all of this without complaining." Unfortunately, Kade hears this statement and bursts into hysterical laughter.
"Jazz, GROWING?! You have got to be kidding me!" Real smooth move Kade. I wish they would let us at the knives in the kitchen. I'm sure I could put them to good, imaginative use. Snickers reverberate around the table and I smack the back of Kade's head.
"Thanks a lot fuzzy donkey." Being forbidden to swear here has put my creative swearing skills to work. He smirks, then grabs my hand for me to sit next to him, Jason following suit to sit on my other side with the evil mountain of macaroni. Jason hands me the plastic fork he had grabbed and looks between the food and I expectantly. I childishly stick my tongue out at him, causing him to smirk.
"Either you eat it, or I feed it to you."
I laugh him off. "Can you make airplane noises?" I keep on chuckling until he actually picks up the fork, scoops up some cheesy goodness and zooms it towards my mouth, plane noises coming out of his smart-ass mouth. If only he wasn't so attractive. I mean I can't help my basic primal instincts. I grab the fork forcefully out of his hand and shove the pasta into my mouth, wishing that plastic forks could do irreparable damage. I huff and continue eating until the first bowl is finished, listening to the loud conversations going around the table. I join in on most of the conversations, hoping that Jason won't discover that I've stopped eating.
"Hey GabriELLE!" I hear Craig call from across the cafeteria, "Lune says she's got some dresses you can borrow, freak!" Gabriel lowers his head and blushes. Gabe has what you would call Gender Identity Disorder, so he's always identified better with girls than his own gender. He's incredibly shy and he came here about 3 months ago after his attempted suicide when his so-called "best friend" told his whole school. He still has deep scars marking his wrists from the razors.
"Hey Craig!" I yell and hold up my three middle fingers, "read between the lines, bitch!" Don't mess with my friends, or I'll retaliate 10 times worse. Jason covers my mouth with his hand and forces me to look at him.
"No more talking for lunch. Eat the rest of your food, then you will go straight to solitary. That's enough." I get angrier by the second and when he lets go of me to eat, I kick him in the shin and run for the door. Two other orderlies grab me and when I start to fight, one of them jabs a sedative filled syringe into my leg.
The last thing I see is Jason holding his shin, Kade yelling at them to stop and out of the corner of my eye, Dr. Fresdit entering the cafeteria, smirking in sadistic glee.
