Prim's Games Book 2

Chapter 16

I wake up the next morning feeling cold. I open my eyes and find myself on the floor. How did I get here? I wonder. I groan as I sit up, my back feeling stiff. I head to the bathroom to wash my face and then slip on a grey sweater with some black leggings and walk to the dining room.

The moment I step inside the dining room Katniss's loving arms are wrapped around me.

"You okay?" She asks.

I shrug and sit down next to her. I'm not that hungry, but I eat any ways because I could starve in the games. When we finish eating, Cinna and Portia come to collect us.

Effie looks at us with tears in her eyes.

"You never deserved this. You shouldn't be going through this." She hugs me tightly and kisses my cheek.

I smile at her and walk over to Haymitch.

I blow a strand of hair out of my face.

"Any last advice?" I ask.

"Stay alive." He chuckles and hugs me.

I glance up at him and notice him exchanging glances with Peeta, Leo, and Katniss.

"What's wrong?" I ask.

They look at me with worried expressions.

"Stop hiding stuff from me!" I yell in frustration and stomp into the elevator.

Katniss runs after me.

"Prim, it's nothing." She reassures me.

I cross my arms and turn around. I can tell that she's hurt, but I don't care. I'm not keeping secrets from her.

"Come on, Prim." I can feel Cinna's hands leading me towards the hovercraft. I sit down next to Katniss, even though I'm still not talking to her. A woman with a white lab cost suddenly walks in with a box full of syringes. She inserts what I think is our trackers in everybody's arm. When she comes to me, she rudely snatches my arm and shoves the syringe in my arm.

"Ouch!" I say as I rub my arm.

"It's not that bad." She says and grins at me.

I roll my eyes and she glares at me.

The hovercraft lands and I walk off with Katniss, Leo, and Peeta. When we head to separate rooms, I hug them tightly before they leave. Cinna tells me to wait while he goes with Katniss to get her dressed. I sit on a chair and wait for Cinna. But as I'm looking at the glass tube, I start to cry. I don't want to go into the games again. I don't want anyone to die. I don't want Katniss, Peeta, or Leo to die. But most of all, I don't want to die. I finally stop crying and wipe away my tears when Cinna walks in.

"You okay?" He asks.

I nod and look at a piece of blue clothing in his arms.

"Is that my outfit?"

"Yes. It's a very thin material, so the arena will probably be warm."

"Oh." I say.

He helps me put on the thin blue jumpsuit with the dark blue boots. It also has a squishy belt. Cinna attaches my Mockingjay pin to my outfit.

"Can I tie my hair?" I ask.

"I'm sorry, but no. Apparently, there's a new rule change, and you can't tie your hair back anymore."

"What am I supposed to do with this?" I say, gesturing to my big mess of blond hair.

He sighs. "I honestly have no idea."

I sit down on the bench and drink a sip of water.

"1 minute until launching." A voice says.

I stare at Cinna with wide eyes.

"You're gonna be okay." He says and hugs me tightly.

I nod and step into the glass tube. But it doesn't go up. I look at Cinna and he just shakes his head. And then the Peacekeepers run inside. They all grab Cinna and start beating him.

"Stop it! Leave him alone!" I scream at the top of my lungs. "I hate you!" I pound on the glass.

I keep screaming at them but they ignore me. Tears stream down my face like a river. And then Cinna closes his eyes and the Peacekeepers drag him out. My tube suddenly starts to rise and I quickly wipe away my tears. I can only form one thought as I rise into the arena.

I'm going to die.

The first thing I see when my tube rises is water. It's swirling around my tube. I touch some of it and taste it. It tastes like saltwater. I look to my left and see Seeder. She smiles at me warmly. I smile back and then look to my right, where I see Finnick. Katniss is about 3 people down from Finnick and Peeta is about 4 people down from Seeder. The monotone voice suddenly starts to count down.

"5...4...3...2...1!" It says.

I immediately jump in the water. I don't really know how to swim, so I look at Finnick and copy his arm motions. I'm the second one to get to the cornucopia besides Finnick, and I grab 3 backpacks, a bow and a few arrows, and a few knives. But then I feel a sharp pain in my arm. I look down and see a knife lodged in it and look up to see Cashmere grinning at me. I rip the knife out, trying not to scream in pain, and hurl it at Cashmere. It hits her in the leg and she falls to the ground.

I glance at Finnick and I notice that he's carrying Mags. I close my eyes, trying to block out the pain, when I hear someone yelling.

"Run, Prim! Run!" Finnick yells.

I quickly grab the packs start to run as fast as I can. I stop for a moment and look over to see Katniss and Peeta catching up with us. Leo is no where to be seen.

We finally stop running and sit down on the grass. I sort through the packs. The blue one contains some iodine, 2 empty bottles of water, some ointment, a sleeping bag, a long piece of rope, beef jerky, more knives, and some bandages. I dab some ointment on my arm wound and wrap a bandage around it. I decide to take that one and we look through the black backpack. This one contains two sleeping bags, some glasses, a bottle of water, a dagger, some dried fruit, and some crackers. Katniss takes that one. The last pack, a green one, contains a sleeping bag, 3 empty bottles of water, some knives, a pair of socks, and another piece of rope. I give the pack to Peeta. Finnick already grabbed a yellow backpack and he also got a trident.

"Have any of you seen Leo?" I ask.

Everyone shakes their head.

"We'll find him. But let's keep moving." Finnick says.

I walk in front of everyone, holding my knife in case anyone tries to hurt us. But then, at one point, when I slash my knife at the leaves, an electrical shock runs through me and I feel myself being thrown backwards. I can't move, or even speak. I can hear Katniss screaming my name, and I see someone kneel down next to me. And that's when I black out.
