Girl with the Purple Tattoo

I probably forgot to mention that I had a small purple butterfly tattoo on my back. I don't know how I managed it, but I convinced my parents last year to let me have it. And yes, it hurt really badly. Anyway, for some reason because today was my sixteenth birthday, this little piece of body art became my most celebrated asset. Confused? Sure you are!

So far, save for that most disturbing Lestat dream topping my morning, the day had been pretty uneventful. And I know what you're thinking—no, I didn't want some huge Sweet 16 bash because, let's fact it, I haven't exactly forged many friendships. My only plans were those with mom and dad and them treating me to birthday dinner at Pierre's Bistro on Lexington Avenue in the downtown Theatre district. That's until noon rolled around when Loden pinged me on Skype video chat.

My heart skipped when his beautiful, cheery face popped up on my computer screen and he greeted me with his usual, "Hey, you!"

"Hey back!" He was so cute, his hair moussed back, all smiles and dimples.

"Happy birthday! You didn't think I'd forgotten, did you?"

"Uh, do you really want me to answer that?" Truth is, I was really just hoping the day would end.

"How could you think that? Nevermind, it doesn't matter anyway. It's your special day and I've got something for you."

Widening my eyes, I responded, "You do? What?"

"You'll see." He disappeared from camera range for a minute. When he returned, he had his guitar in hand.

"OMG, what is this?!"

"This, Chloe Lynette Branson, is the song I wrote for you. It's called Girl with the Purple Tattoo." I think I turned three shades red as he began singing the ballad; its lyrics were so sweet and thoughtful and beautiful.

They say when it comes

It lights your heart and clouds your mind;

It stirs feelings inside you,

Emotions of a different kind.

That day when you touched me,

I knew right then,

Not just any lover, not just any friend—

Girl with the purple winged beauty

Inked in her skin...

I got a bit emotional hearing those words strummed to such beautiful chords. It was like something out of a fairytale. And, if by some stroke of magic I could have kissed him through that screen, I would have planted the longest, sweetest wet one on him. I'd never had my very own song, so he managed to turn my birthday into something really special.
