"Y/N? Y/N! Oh my sweet Listener, how could I have let this happen? Y/N?"
Someone's calling my name,
"Quick! Bring her in here, hurry now. Careful."
Where am I? What's going on?
"Is she going to be ok? Tell poor Cicero his Listener will be ok!"
I groaned and tried to open my eyes, my head swam and my side was so cold it burned. Everything was blurry and out of focus but I could make out the shape of an Argonian gathering potions in the corner and Cicero pacing next to me. Only a few candles illuminated what seemed to be a small wooden shack since all the curtains had been drawn. Or was it dark outside? I could not tell. My leg throbbed as I swung it off the table and I gasped as my arm spasmed after testing my weight on it. My head hit the table with a loud thud causing Cicero to rush over.
"Y/N my sweet Listener you're awake! You mustn't move." He picked my leg up and gently rest it back on the table.
"Where am I?" My voice was hoarse and my throat burned.
"A safe place. Don't talk, drink this." The Argonian woman lifted my head up and poured something thick and sweet down my throat. "It's milk of the poppy with honey to help you sleep," she explained in a soothing tone. Darkness soon engulfed me yet again. "Do not be afraid."
***
When I awoke I saw that my armour was gone and I was wearing nothing but a thin pair of trousers. Bandages were wrapped tight around my thigh, torso, and shoulder, with my breasts bound tightly. Some might mistake me for a man, I scanned the room looking for Cicero and saw him slumped in a chair near my bed. When was I moved to a bed? The sudden realisation hit me as I noticed a blanket tangled at my feet and something soft under my back.
I murmured incoherently and tried to sit up. I winced as a burning sensation raced up my side and laid back down.
"Cicero?" I croaked out. Nothing. "Cicero?" I managed a bit louder. This time he groggily turned to look at me. He blinked softly before whispering, "Y/N?"
I nodded and he rushed over so fast the chair fell over. He cupped my face with his hands as tears began to spill from his eyes and down his cheeks.
"I thought I was going to lose you Y/N..." I smiled and wiped his cheeks with my good arm.
"Never," I whispered.
***
"Oh good, you're awake. I was starting to worry the fever would never break," the Argonian woman smiled as she opened the door.
"Fever?" I asked in confusion. Cicero held my hand and gave me a sad smile.
"Oh yes, you've had a horrid fever for the last week. You'd thrash about the bed and yell in your sleep. I thought we were going to have to tie you down. You never woke for very long, you were unconscious the entire time. Cicero never left your side and was always dabbing your mouth with water since you wouldn't eat or drink. I'm honestly surprised you aren't dead." She shrugged and began mixing herbs together at the alchemy lab in the corner.
"Cicero thought you'd never wake," Cicero murmured quietly.
"Well, I'm just full of surprises," I laughed —which turned into a painful coughing fit — and squeezed Cicero's hand.
