Kit and I walk through the grand big doors leading to the ballroom of the social. We stop at the top of the flight of stairs and I take in all of it my breath stuck in my chest. Groups and groups of people cover the entire floor, everyone dressed up so well I can't tell who they are anymore they look like different people.
We walk down the stairs slowly trying to sneak in and then everyone turns and looks, pointing and whispering into their partner's ear. People then start to look behind them and clear a pathway, I look at the end of it seeing an all too familiar face of my school enemy, Matt Strike.
I guess you could say his last name matches his magic since he is in the storm department and handles lightning like a champ. My eyes narrow and I sense Kit tense up next to me. We've had many problems with Matt, and not to mention his partner Lilian Sky with the power of nature. He walks along the cleared path with confidence and fury, Kit and I move forward and meet him halfway.
The whole room is silent, all eyes are on us. People anxiously wait for a fight to break out, circling us. Without saying a word Matt turns and looks up at a balcony viewing over the ballroom and a pretty blonde gazes down in an evergreen ball gown. She whispers harsh words to her friends and leaves them, walking down the stairs from the balcony and straight to Matt.
As soon as she joins his side he looks straight into my eyes and it's as if I see lightning bolts flash in his eyes. "Can't wait for the spar tonight. Lily and I have been prepared so don't think it will be easy. We're only there for one thing and that is to win." Matt says with an evil looking grin on his face.
I take a daring step forward and match his expression. "Good to know it will be a decent fight. It'll be interesting if you actually try this time." I say and step back next to Kit.
"See you in the arena, lovers." She says, then turns to Matt and kisses him on the cheek before going back up the stairs. Matt then walks off to his friends in the corner.
I sigh with disgust. What a hypocrite and no we're not lovers you little- I'm cut off from my thoughts as Kit pulls on my arm and I turn to see Jas with William laughing and talking with their group. We walk over there and Jasmine jumps up and down and hugs me before pulling me off to the side with two other girls, Jane and Crystal. "See I told you I did a really good job with the makeup." She says motioning toward my face.
They gawk at it and then soon go back to talking while I, for the first time in a while, fall silent having nothing to say watching the commotion on the dance floor.

After an hour of my friends talking with others clearly never running out of words, I get up irritated and walk out two side doors leading to a beautiful garden. I walk along the edge until I reach the end where a cliff lays showing a tragic fall. Well this is quite proper to have at a school with such easy use... Suddenly I hear brisk footsteps of what seems to be a group of people.
I look around seeing nowhere to go and start to panic. I can't be seen alone people know I'm vulnerable without Kit. Ever since I came to the school Kit has been kind of my guardian in situations that deals with water. Sure, I'm still human so I'm not gonna be like a witch and melt if you throw a bucket of water on me, but I have my limits. If I am fully submerged in water for a minute it feels like something to slowly burning my heart, like an extreme heartburn that affects you way worse than your average one. Which is why partners are important, I protect Kit from any fire and he protects me from water, since kids think it's a mission to please Matt and harm me.
The footsteps get louder and before I try to find a way around them the cause of the footprints round the corner and I slam into someone's chest falling back. Before I fall he grabs my wrist and I stand straight again, taking steps back seeing who it is. Kit. I'm half relieved but half annoyed it's him, accompanied by Jake, a boy on the swimming team with Kit.
Oh so he's now hanging with his swim team. I secretly wish he would stop checking on me like it's his absolute mission. "There you are, you need to stop sneaking off honestly. You know it's no time to mess around before a serious spar Amity." Kit says with his eyes sparkling with worry.
"I'm fine, I thought I would get some fresh air that's all." I say annoyed and I walk past him swiftly to the doors. I enter the ballroom and Kit catches up getting me to sit with him and his team. It's unfortunate those with my magic don't have a sport, since they're all too 'dangerous' to do on campus so I'm stuck with watching the swim team with other fire students with partners on the team during that class period.
But little did I know the spar ahead of me was going to completely change my mood for this day.
