A B O U T
The Pokémon Writing Coalition is an awards account affiliated with the PokemonWatties, @PokémonWritingLeague, and @GottaReadEmAllClub to bring forth a new annual competition with a unique twist.
Every year when entries are opened, themes are released. These themes are purposefully vague and general in order to tap into the participants' creativity. They are one-word themes consisting of something tangible or intangible. Some aim to push authors out of their comfort zones. Others explore underrepresented concepts.
Examples of themes:
Red
Glass
Winter
Solace
Vengeance
Spite
Tyranny
ConservatismYour interpretation and adaption of the theme is an essential part of your work's success. Those that creatively adapt these themes perform the best when it comes around to judging.
Do these themes need to be in the readers' face when reading? No. These themes can be as subtle or as loud as you want to be. It can be a recurring motif, an overarching message, or the foundation of a book's plot.
To accompany the theme, a list of details will be given to spark inspiration. This can be anything from color associations to definitions to famous quotes. For example, let's say the theme was "revenge."
Revenge
The desire to inflict retribution
Colors associated with it:
black and redFlowers associated with it:
Bird's foot trefoil (Meaning: Revenge)
Cypress (Meaning: Death, sorrow)
Orange Lily (Meaning: Desire, hatred, ambition)"To be angry is to revenge the faults of others onto ourselves." - Alexander Pope
"While seeking revenge, dig two graves—one for yourself." - Douglas Horton
To promote variety and choice, we will feature three themes every year. One may be intangible and the other tangible, one may refer to a societal issue and one might not, etc.
P U R P O S E
Mission statement: The Pokémon Writing Coalition aims to spark creativity within Pokémon writers, promote out-of-the-box thinking, and bring to light global issues in the form of a writing competition.
After judging, critiquing, and writing several books for years now, I—@Sheare on Wattpad—noticed the sheer amount of books that don't look beyond the words on the page. The community has a surplus of authors that write and limit themselves because of that narrow perspectives.
This competition aims to push authors to explore concepts and meanings that they may have not explored otherwise. It is a catalyst for experimentation and discussion.
The PWC was also created to work alongside the Pokémon Watty Awards to spark ideas for that account's entries. I hope that this competition will bring forth more competitive books for the PWA.
Since the PWC is smaller, this may be a good entry-level competition for beginners who are just learning how to write. This competition may be significantly less daunting than the PWA, serving as a gateway into a competition where more advanced writers have the advantage.
