When I was a boy I once saw my dog kill a cat in the yard. It was a brutal sight, blood and screeching until all that remained was a ragged lump of meat. My dad and I decided to bury it in the backyard so we grabbed our shovels and picked a spot. As I was digging a hole I turned to my father and asked:
"Dad, what did the cat do?"
"Well son, sometimes no matter how well you think you've trained your pet, you can't forget that at the end of the day they are animals and animals can be brutal and cruel."
I paused for a moment, contemplating the concept of this before looking at the plot of land next to the hole we were digging for the cat. Grass was already starting to growing on it and soon it would look just like the rest of the yard.
"What happened to Mom?"
"Well, humans are animals too," he said as he pat me on the head; his hand lingered for just a second longer than usual.
