Kathine, who was now 5, and Takashi, 14, were running along the backyard while their mom and dad cook burgers on this amazing summer evening. They were having a cookout with some family friends in the neighborhood with a campfire and food. Even a nice tent in the back yard by the steps on the porch. Takashi and Kathine were playing tag when their mom called them over to go change into cleaner clothes for when people arrive. They were both covered in dirt from throwing piles of earth at each other.
Kathine fought with her mother when she tried to give Kathine a bath to wash out all the grass from her hair but eventually gave in with the bribe of wearing her favorite purple shirt. Her favorite shirt was a short sleeved royal purple a cartoon hippo in the center of it. Kathine loved hippos. Ever since the last time they visited the zoo which was a year ago. Since then, she's been obsessed with hippos.
"When is Matt coming over?" Kathine looked above at her mother who was currently scrubbing her hair thoroughly.
"Cover your eyes sweety." She ordered as she scooped up some soapy water and poured it over Kathine's head. As the water trickled down her hair, she shivered.
"Mommy it's cold." She ducked her head and wrapped her arms around herself to keep warm.
"I'm sorry sweetie, just a little bit longer and you can get out." Her mother said as she grabbed the scrunchy ball and the little container of baby body wash and poured a little on the scrunchy ball and rubbed it so it would soap up. She rubbed Kathine's body with the wash thoroughly to make sure she didn't miss a spot.

Kathine soon got out and wrapped herself tightly in the towel for warmth. Her mother helped her into her favorite hippo shirt and some jeans. Karen blow dried Kathine's hair so her black silky locks were soft and fluffy. Kathine's hair barely reached to her shoulders with her bangs hanging loosely over her forehead. Her mother pulled her hair into a small ponytail so she can play freely without her hair getting pulled.
"And Matt's coming in about 5 minutes so how about you go out and play with your brother for a bit before he comes." Her mother suggested and Kathine was out the door in seconds.
The Holt family was a small family like theirs. With two children and a mother and father. The way the Holts and the Shiroganes know each other is that James Shirogane and Samuel Holt worked together at the Garrison.
They became close buddies when James walked into the wrong class once. He started teaching basic algebra to a biology class. Honest mistake really, but it did make a great story to the families involved. Matt was just a year younger than Takashi. He had a younger sister, Katie, who was 3.

Soon enough, the Holts arrived with homemade snacks for before and after dinner. The second they reached the driveway, Matt was already unbuckling his seat belt and halfway out the car. He was more excited to see Takashi than Kathine but he still hung out with the both of them.

"SHIRO!!!" Matt would yell before engulfing Takashi in a hug that sent them both hitting the ground. They both giggled rolling around on the ground, wrestling. Kathine just stood there, waiting for the boys to stop. She didn't want to interrupt Takashi and his fun. People at school called Takashi "Shiro" because it was easier to remember than his original Japanese name.
"Matt, get off him you're 13." Colleen shouted from the car, unbuckling the toddler from her car seat and lifting her into her arms. Katie rested on her mother's right arm with her left arm over her mother's shoulders. Curly orange hair growing into flowing locks on her small head.
Matt got off of Takashi and rushed over to his mother to stand beside her.
Colleen gave him a stern look then walked to stand beside her husband who was talking to James.
Matt just went back to fighting for strength with Takashi.
"Hey! I'm here too!" Kathine whined at the boys who were on the ground. Getting Takashi dirty again.
"Just go and play with your dolls or something." Matt looked at Kathine confused why she was still standing there. Kathine looked at him with a nasty cold glare before walking inside to rush to her room and onto her bed.

Kathine didn't understand why she didn't like doing girly things. Like playing with dolls or playing house. All she wanted to do was play with the boys. But they never liked her. They thought she had cooties.

After the cookout with the Holts was over, all the children were tired. Especially Kathine. When she's tired, she's really cranky. James carried her from outside to her room. He got her dressed into her pajamas and got her tucked into bed.
"Daddy can you tell me a story." She asked tiredly, already half asleep.
"Sure sweetie, what would you like me to read for you tonight?" He sat on the edge of her twin sized bed.
"Voltron?" She questioned. James put his hand to his chin and rubbed it like he was thinking. Then removed his hand and patted Kathine's leg underneath the blanket with a smile.
"Alright." He sat up straight and Kathine layed on her side to look at him as he read. Eventually she drifted off into slumber and James tucked her in and shut her light off then quietly tiptoed to the door and shut it.
