It was a cold morning sitting on the bus surrounded by screaming children. Kathine sat by the window, head leaning on it giving her a headache every time they hit a bump. Katie was just going on about how awesome space was and how she'd love to meet some cool aliens.
"Hey! I almost forgot." She said before rummaging through her giant backpack full of gadgets and what not then pulling out what seemed to a box wrapped in Christmas star wars wrapping paper and handed it to Kathine. Kathine just stared at it in Katie's hands before it was shoved into her chest.
"What are you afraid of? Just open it!" Katie was jumping in her seat just waiting. Kathine slowly unwrapped the box without tearing the paper. The box was small. Big enough to hold a beanie baby. (If you know what that is, bless your soul)
She opened the box to find a picture frame decorated with red paint with little foam stickers of robot lion heads, Red and green, with purple sparkles stuck to the paint. The picture inside was Kathine, Shiro, Matt, and Katie. All of them smiling brightly. This was taken before Shiro and Matt went off to the Garrison. Shiro and Matt wearing their new uniforms while Katie was wearing her green and orange dress with her hair down. Kathine looked tired even though she placed a huge grin on her face. She looked as if she was crying before this was taken. Well she did. A lot. Shiro would be off learning how to pilot a ship to someday explore space. She was just afraid that if he does that, he might not want to come back. He assured he will visit but until I'm old enough to enroll into the Garrison, he won't be around often.

Kathine smiled genuinely at Katie. She was happy she got this last momento before he forgot about her.
Katie got that as a sign she loved it and hugged Kathine. She still wasn't used to Katie's arms squeezing the breath out of her but she hugged back anyway.
"Happy birthday Kat." Katie whispered into her ear as she finally let go as she sat up straighter and reverted her gaze to the front of the bus as they arrived at the front of the middle school. The middle school was where they dropped off all the students who went to there and the elementary school, that sat next to it. The elementary school was connected to the middle school by a hallway that connected to the lunch room. In there, all the way from 4th grade to 8th graders ate lunch. Kathine kind of felt bad for the lunch ladies that they had to deal with so many annoying children every single day. But I guess it comes with the job of making tolerable tasting food.

Katie launched from her seat and out of the bus before anyone else could stand up. 'She must really be in a hurry' Kathine thought. The children yelled and laughed as the rest of them exited the bus. Kathine being the last one off, the bus driver stopped her.
"You're sure your going to be ok?" The bus driver was a nice lady who Kathine seemed to really connect to. She worried about her when she was looking tired, knowing Kathine rarely gets sleep.
"I'll be fine, Mrs. Hanson." Kathine nodded and got out. It was going to be a long day.
