"Scott!" yelled Lydia as she paraded through the castle. It was the day after the Prince Derek incident, so Scott had been sent to kitchen staff which was not a pleasant job. Lydia gasped as she entered the kitchen from how bad everything looked, especially Scott.
He was covered in grease, flour, sweat, tears, and any other item found in the kitchen. It was a very shocking sight for Lydia; because, Scott was usually so well put together: neat hair, shower every morning, and clean clothes everyday (which meant he did his own laundry).
"Scott?" Lydia slowly approached the boy not sure how he would react.
"What Lydia? Are you here to rub it in my face, or to tell me how your day as a servant is going; because frankly I don't care. Theo, your best friend might I add, put me out of a job, so Prince Theo can suck my-" Lydia cut him off before he could continue.
"Scott! Yes, Theo is my best friend, but what he did yesterday was not right. He should've thought about the consequences on people like you. Though that is not why I am here." Scott had a questioning look on his face not sure whether or not he should trust the banshee. "Prince Theo has requested that you show the new servant around all day. His name is Liam, he'll be here in about an hour so I suggest you go change and get ready. He'll be at the front gate."
"Uh, ya sure, okay. I'll go get ready. Bye Lydia. Thank you!" Scott dashed out of the room, eager to get out of the dirty, hot, kitchen.
Forty five minutes later Scott was ready to meet the new servant. His hair was brushed, he had on clean clothes, and a much needed shower had been taken. He began walking down the hallway towards the front gate when he saw Theo furiously storming down the hall.
Scott began to speed walk not wanting to make contact with the angry prince after yesterdays mishap.
When he arrived at the front gate there was a younger boy waiting there. He had a clean shaven face, light brown hair, and light blue eyes.
"You must be the newbie?"
"Uh, ya. My name is Liam. Liam Dunbar." His voice was shaking from the nerves that came with a new job.
"Great and I'm Scott. I'll be showing you around the castle and telling you your duties and such. Follow me." Scott began walking off as Liam trailed behind admiring every detail of the castle.
"This is your room." Liam looked around at the room. It was decently sized for one person, but there was another bed which made the area appear small and crammed.
"Who sleeps there?"
"Another servant named Mason. Don't worry he's kind." Liam nodded in reassurance as he sat his bag down on the bed waiting for his next order.
"You will most likely be on kitchen staff, but that's tomorrow. Today you can just wear what you have on."
"What do you mean most likely? That's what I applied for."
Scott knew he would need to tell the poor boy about the selection at some point during the day, but he didn't want it out in the open first thing. He didn't want to scare the kid off.
"There's a selection tomorrow."
"What's a selection." Scott new the boy would want answers, but he honestly was not in the mood to talk about the selection which would most likely ruin his future.
"The selection is a process that occurs in the castle when a royal family member needs a new personal servant. In this case that would be Prince Theo due to the fact that Prince Derek is gone." Scott let his voice drop at the end: he missed Derek, he was kind and they were mostly friends. But, Scott presumed that tomorrow he would be chosen as Theo's new servant solely, because, Theo needed a way to release his anger: and that method happened to be torturing Scott and the only reason that Scott would be chosen tomorrow was that he reminded Theo of Derek which reminded him of Stiles.
"How does it work?" God this boy has so many questions Scott thought. Though he was obligated to tell the boy everything he needed to know.
"Basically tomorrow at 8 a.m. all of the male servants who are not already personal servants-"
"What about the female servants?"
"Sometimes they do get asked to participate, but Prince Theo likes male personal servants. Anyway all of the male servants will line up in the great hall and Theo will evaluate everyone. He may ask you questions and you are obligated to answer though most of the time he already has his next servant picked out. Then they must get approved by King Peter. After that you become Prince Theo's personal servant. Simple as that."
"Wow that sounds kind of exciting!"
"No! It is not exciting" Liam gave him a look as if to ask: why is it so bad.
"Being a personal servant isn't bad. I have been one myself. The problem is Prince Theo is harsh and cruel to his servants most of them are in prison only one has gotten away, but he's in exile now." Scott began breathing heavily as he looked down at the floor trying to prevent tears from flowing.
"Scott why are you crying?"
"Because I think I will be chosen tomorrow and he will make my life a living hell."
"Scott it's okay. Even if you do get chosen there's no need to fear I'll be there to help you." Even as Liam spoke those words he was shaking of fear from the possibility that he could be chosen.
"Thanks."
"Anytime. Now can we get back to my training. I don't want to get in trouble for doing something wrong."
"Yes of course."
The rest of the day Scott told Liam everything about the castle: where everything was located, who was above him in status, who was below, how to address those with a higher status, who to watch out for, what time to awake, how to address a royal, what to do when a royal enters the room, how to enter a royals room if necessary, emergency exits, secret passageways, even the door to the dungeon. Everything that could possibly have been shown was shown.
11 p.m. rolled around and the two boys said good night: heading their separate ways.
When Liam arrived in his room he saw his roommate already asleep and he assumed he might as well do the same. He undressed and got into the provided pajama set: blue and white checkered made out of cotton. Liam laid down in his small cot considering what fate held for him in the next day.
