"Why thank you, Miss Kathleen. I can always count on you to make my coffee just right." Mr.Carter complimented me as I gave him his order.

"Now, Mr.Carter, you know well that my mother cannot make a proper cup of coffee for anyone." I joked with him as I fixed my white blouse.

"Hey, for a white woman, she sure makes your daddy happy." He looked behind me as I slowly turned around to see my dad making food and my mom cracking jokes while he cooks.

I turned back to the old man infront of me as he handed me two bills. "Oh, Mr.Carter, your meal is only half of what you gave me." I explained, handing him one of his bills as he got up from his seat, his cane in his hand.

"Don't worry, ya little ankle-bitter; keep the change. You were made in the shade, you'll go far in that college of yours." He explained, as he picked up his lunch and tipped his hat before walking out of the door.

I smiled down at the money as I walk to the kitchen to find my parents giggling about something.

"Whatcha got there, pumpkin?" My mom asked me, a notepad in her hand.

"Mr.Carter gave me a whole bill to pay for my college next year." I explained as I put it in my jar found only where my mama and papa know.

We ran a family business. Me, my mama, my papa, my granny, and my 23rd cousin Joyce and two other family friends, Irene and Clyde. Joyce came with us to New Jersey a few summers ago when Texas was too rough on my family.

My mother being a white woman to have married a black man made our family an instant target down there. I was bullied by the other kids telling me that I should be ashamed to be black. When I turned 12, my family finally decided to move back to Jersey where my father was raised with my granny.

"Just a few more bills and you'll be able to go to that journalism program for college." My mama encouraged me as she rubbed my shoulder.

Even though i'm darker than she is, I look very similar to her than my father.

I turned and gave her a smile as I pulled my notepad from my apron and walked out to the public.

As I made myself public, I noticed a gang of boys walk in. Two out of the seven boys looked similar to each other, as if they were twins.

Twins and triplets were glorified in my town considering there aren't very many and ever since the second world war, everyone is trying to regain the population.

As I was working on refilling the napkins alongside my cousin that's working with a customer at the cash register, I heard the boys mumbling as they chuckled to themselves.

I roll my eyes as I fixed my skirt, going back to my task.

One of the boys walked up to the counter that I was currently working on and shot me a wink along with a smile as he sat on the stool.

"Hello dolly, aren't ya just as beautiful as Marilyn Monroe herself." He complimented me with a toothpick in his mouth.

I look at his friends behind him and then back at the boy in front of me.

Trust me, he was quite attractive, but his ego was as big as James Brown's career.

I leaned on the counter, taking the toothpick out of his mouth with a smirk.

"Listen here, you and your little greaser group." I started, putting the toothpick in my mouth. "You can either order and keep the peace, or get bent with your little group of ankle-bitters outta here." I said firmly, standing back up with my arms crossed.

The group of boys all cooed at my statement and the boy in front of me looked down, smiling at my courage as his brother jumped in.

"Nah, my twin here can show you a great time if you want to back seat bingo with him later." He encouraged me, leaning on his shoulder.

"As if I would make out with a white boy in the back of his chariot." I scoffed, looking at my cousin standing next to me at the cash register.

I could tell that she's holding her laughter.

"Oh, come on, let me razz your berries a bit." The boy continued to flirt with me. "You didn't take my toothpick out for nothin'."

I took the toothpick out of my mouth and threw it in the bin next to me.

"I need a name for the greaser." I pushed.

He isn't going to get me. All these white boys try to get me to get with them so that they can later shame me that my grand-pappy was a slave like back in Texas.

The boy shook his leather jacket and fixed his hair before extending his arm out, his hand ready for me to shake.

"Dolan, Grayson Dolan." He introduced himself, his face still looking stupid as ever with his eyes squinted.

His group alongside his brother waited for my response.

I shook his hand. "Nice to meet you, now get. I don't need a bunch of boys getting on my last nerve." I pointed at the door as I turn, getting ready to walk back into the kitchen.

"Wait-what's your name?" He asked, standing up from the stool.

I turn back to face him. "Don't worry about it." I said with a smirk, opening up the door to the kitchen.

His gang starts to laugh as I hear one of the boys say "You just got clanked by a n*gg*r."

My heart dropped at the comment as I kept walking in. I turned around to see the boy with blonde hair and dimples seeming proud of his comment as the boy's twin brother hit the back of his head.

"Don't say that shit, Jack." he said, walking out, Grayson being the last one to leave.

"What was that all about?" My father asked me as I stood next to him.

"Just some teenagers being teenagers, papa." I explained, looking out of the serving window as he walked out of the restaurant, keeping his eyes on me as he followed his group, waving to me as he left.
