"Would ya stop dragging me? I'm not a puppet, Lorraine." I complain as my best friend dragged me towards the football field.
"I have to see Vince before he plays!" She explained, hurrying our speed towards the front of the bleachers where the boys were warming up.
We stopped as she waved to her man, a big smile on her face as he waved back with a toothy grin.
One thing that I loved about New Jersey, was that colored and whites were allowed to play on the same teams, however, we still had to sit further away from the actual field so that the whites could see better.
Good thing I brought my peppers.
Vince runs up to us and leans on the bar between the field and the crowd.
"My oh my, you look beautiful tonight, darlin'." He complimented Lorraine as he took off his helmet, not being able to take his eyes off her.
"Ya better win for me if you're gonna come up to me with that apple butter." She giggled as she shoved his shoulder playfully.
He gave out a toothy smile as he chuckled. "Trust me, i'll become an actor just for you, baby." He winked at her.
I chuckled quietly as I slowly walked out of the scene, getting something from the concession stand, leaving the two lovers.
Once I payed 50 cents for my chocolate flavored Charleston Chew bar, I walked slowly around the area trying to kill time before the game.
"You came!" I heard someone say behind me.
I turn to see Grayson in his football uniform, the number 47 on his chest. He was panting from the conditioning Coach Pool made them do.
"Of course, Lorraine has to support her boyfriend to be." I explain, looking back at my best friend giggling with the man she likes.
"Vince. He's a flatter bum I suppose." He complimented his team mate.
"I suppose." I said, turning back to him. He looked nice.
He had a classy chassis.
"Thank you." He told me, chuckling a bit.
"What?" I asked, looking at his face, before realizing that I said it out loud.
I brought my hands to face, the candy bar away from me which made him laugh even harder.
"Well, now that I know that you're here, I suppose that i'll play extra well for you." He said with a smirk, bringing his face closer to mine.
I looked around to make sure Laurie or anyone could see us.
His finger turned my chin so that i'm looking at his eyes. They were very nice, they made me melt.
"Don't worry about the others and the color of your skin." He assured me. "You're safe." He whispered which brought butterflies to my stomach.
The horn blew as he took a bite from my Charleston Chew, walking backwards.
"I'll see you after the game!" He shouted to me, his mouth full of my candy bar as he ran back to the field, leaving me speechless.
Oh my, this boy.
I smile as I look down at my chocolate bar and take a bite of it. It taste evens sweeter than before now that I know that Grayson has eaten a piece.
I walk back to Lorraine as she says 'good luck' to Vince, turning towards me.
She noticed the Charleston Chew and frowned. "You didn't get me one?"
I shook my head, looking at the floor. "Let's go find a seat." I said, taking her arm and walking up towards our side.
