christmas hasn't always been the best time of year for me, per say.
...
okay. christmas fucking sucks.
every year it's been the same. my family could never afford much of anything, so my usual christmas present would be a new pack of boxers from the dollar general and a candy bar.
and that hasn't changed much in my adult life either.
i didn't care for big christmas dinners, so i decided to look up any food place st all that would be open today.
down the road from my flat there was one pizza place in all of town that was open.
i walked there, as it was only a few blocks away anyways, and opened the door to the small pizza place.
the smell of pizza and meat immediately filled up in my nose, making me sigh with contentment.
i ordered a slice of pizza and leaned against the counter while they prepared it.
i began to scan my surroundings. there were lights hanging everywhere and cheap plastic slow flakes hanging from the ceiling. outside the window you could see a big santa decoration which is supposed to meet you at the door, but i had paid no mind to it.
and suddenly, i laid my eyes on the prettiest decoration i have ever seen.
there before my eyes, sitting all alone, was probably just about the most gorgeous human being i have ever come into contact with.
his curly brown hair fell on his face almost perfectly. his hair was styled in the opposite direction of mine, and his was a bit shorter. he was wearing a shirt that read "stay weird," with a picture of what looked to be evan peters. he looked to be tall, though he was sitting down.
i hadn't realized i was staring until the person at the counter eagerly screamed "SIR." to get my attention, which, brought in the attention of said man.
my face turned redder than an apple as i quickly spun around and grabbed my pizza, mouthing a "thank you" to the man who held it out to me, and made my way over to this mystery mans table.
i sat down slowly, waiting for him to look up and notice my presence.
soon enough, he did just that.
the cutest smile i have EVER seen in my life made an appearance on his face as his doughy brown eyes met mine.
i felt butterflies emerge in my tummy as he spoke up, his voice as smooth as fine silk.
"you know, you can take a picture. it'll last longer." he uttered. though his words were rather sarcastic, he kept a soft and innocent smile on his face, like he was telling me that he was joking without words.
i smiled back. "i'm sorry, i just enjoy looking at beautiful people." i said, hoping he'd get the reference.
"is that from the fault in our stars?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.
"that it is." i retorted, sending a cheeky smile his way.
he stood in silence for a second, as if he was pondering something, and finally spoke up again.
"dan. dan howell." he said, reaching his arm out for me to shake, presumably.
i grabbed his hand and brought it to my lips, kissing it softly.
"dan. a beautiful name for a beautiful boy." i spoke, letting his hand go.
his face was red as he smiled shyly at me.
"well, what's your name, mystery man?" he asked
i smiled and took a second to answer for suspense.
"phil lester, at your service." i replied back, staring at his beautiful brown eyes.
he looked back into mine and blurted out "has anybody ever told you that you have the most beautiful eyes on the planet?"
i smiled at that, blushing a little in the process.
"no, i don't believe i have been told that." i answered honestly, butterflies again making an appearance in the pit of my stomach.
"well, they are." he said, smiling wide at me.
wow, i'm surprised my face doesn't hurt from all the smiling we've been doing.
for the next half an hour, he and i talked on and on and on about life. turns out he likes mostly the same things as i do.
though, all good things must come to an end, and he needed to get back home.
we began to walk out of the store before he stopped, which immediately caused me to stop too.
"what?" i asked, looking around to find something that may have caused him to abruptly stop like he did.
he pointed up. what i saw make my heart flutter nearly out of my chest.
a mistletoe.
i raised my eyebrow up at him, though on the inside i was screaming like a school girl.
"what are you suggesting, howell?" i uttered sarcastically, knowing exactly what he was suggesting.
"i'm suggesting you kiss me, lester. it is tradition, after all. so, if we don't, we're kind of ruining christmas." he spoke, trying to seem confident, though his facade was easily looked through, as he was VERY noticeably shaking and his eyes looked nervous.
i grabbed him by the waist and pulled his close, our faces just centimeters apart.
"well, i guess you're right. i wouldn't want to ruin christmas." i whispered softly, before connecting my lips onto his.
they were soft and sweet and beautiful, just like him.
we pulled apart and he giggled softly.
literally the cutest thing i have ever heard.
"hey... can i... can i have your number?" dan asked shyly, shifting from his left foot to his right foot.
"of course you can."
we exchanged numbers and went our separate ways.
i smiled to myself.
maybe this year, i won't be sad on christmas.
