The whole night I turned in bed scared to think about what Katniss Everdeen had in store for me after tonight. I kicked the wall with frustration and screamed into my pillow. Being treated like a princess my whole life, I never had to deal with stress.

The door creaked open and Jake stepped into my room his face scrunched up with concern, "You alright?" he asked. I shrugged as Jake walked over and sat on the edge of my bed. "You're scared aren't you?" he asked.

"Yeah" I sighed, "What do you think Katniss will do after today?" I asked.

Jake shrugged, "I mean, you have no family, what can she do? You're probably gonna die in the games anyway so she won't kill you". I nodded even though Jake's logic sounded like a pile of dead bodies. "Hey," he said softly, "Why don't we go out and get some fresh air?".

"We?" I said skeptically making Jake blush. I pushed back the blankets and shooed Jake out while I changed out of my pajamas to a blue silk blouse and sequined black skirt. I brushed my hair to the left the frowned and brushed it to the right. After fussing with my hair for a few more minutes I just braided it down the left and tossed it over my shoulder in frustration. Since when did Alice Rose Snow start caring about how she looked I wondered.

Jake helped me climb down the window and we scurried down the street away from the training center. "So," Jake said, "What are your plans when the game starts?" he asked.

"If I had one, I wouldn't tell you anyways" I joked and Jake let out a short dry laugh, apparently dank humor wasn't his kind. The truth was, I didn't have a plan, and that scared me, I felt like I was preparing to die, not planning how to survive.

"How are you gonna kill your brother?" I asked, as soon as the words left my mouth I regretted them.

Jake tensed and blinked, then after a few seconds he said, "He's not my brother. I'm adopted". I blinked in surprise and stared at Jake. "So of course, all my family sponsors Brian and not me".

"I'm sorry" I whispered, I wondered how it must feel to have your family betting against your life. I was no stranger to the emotional betrayal.

Jake shrugged, "We should go back," he said touching my shoulder gently and turning steering me around so I was walking back in the direction of the training center. We climbed back into the room by shinnying up the water pipe. After tucking me back into bed, Jake prepared to leave.

"Jake!" I called as his hand reached for the doorknob. Jake turned around displaying a perplexed face. "Just, don't ever feel like you are not wanted okay. I bet there is a lot of people out there willing to sponsor you. I bet I would if I wasn't also a tribute" I stuttered.

Jake smiled, "Thanks, Alice, I'd bet on you to". The words warmed my heart and I smiled as he murmured goodnight then left.

My grandpa once said, "Love, when your willing to put yourself out there for someone". I finally understood what he meant.
