On instinct, I wrapped my hand's around my knives and I was up and facing my traitors in a second. Julie was smiling wickedly while Tessa was fidgeting slightly with her bow and arrows.

"I knew it" I hissed. "Traitors".

"Shut up" Julie ordered with a triumphant smirk, lunging at me with her ax. I dodged the attack and slammed a knife into her shoulder resulting in a howling scream. I shoved past both of them and made a dash for the hills. I only had to make it past the trees then I would have protection. I heard the whistling noise of an arrow and I ducked, but a bit late. The end of the arrowhead grazed my ear and the pain vibrated through my head. I gasped holding my hand to my ear only to receive a handful of red dark blood. Cupping my wounded ear I picked up my pace plowing through the snow. By now I was on the edge of the snowy section of the arena, I was facing the cornucopia and the smokey volcanic terrain behind it. I hesitated and it was because of that one second that Tessa slammed into me knocking us both to the ground.

She swung her bow at me but I ducked it once, then twice. Sweat was pouring down my neck as I strained against her weight. I slammed my knife into her stomach and she gasped before falling backward, her blood seeping into the ground. Her breathing was ragged and slow. She blinked, "I'm so sorry Alice" she whimpered staring at me, her eyes then turned towards the snowy forest and she seemed to say something but it was to quiet for me to pick up. Her eyes shut and a cannon fired. I had to take a few seconds to register that my friend was dead before standing up, gathering my weapons, and heading towards the forest, ready to finish off whatever was left of Julie Thomas.

As I neared the forest the sound of clashing metal was becoming louder. In a grove of evergreen trees,  Jake was fighting Julie sword against ax. For a moment they didn't notice me but then Jake turned and saw me his eyes opened as if he was surprised I was alive.

"You" Julie hissed and abandoning Jake and running towards me, her ax raised high.

"Stop!" Jake yelled but Julie didn't stop. Two things happened at once Julie's ax came down on my head and Jake's sword went flying in the air towards Julie. His sword pierced the back of her stomach and through her chest. She gasped as she fell to her knees, dropping her ax. The point of the metal was surrounded by rapidly pooling blood. She clawed at her stomach before falling backward and fainting on the snow. A cannon fired.

Jake rushed towards me immediately noticing the large pools of fresh blood all over me.

"Oh my goodness, Alice are you ok?" He asked his eyes popping at the sight of my ear.

"I'm fine" I snapped trying to shove past him and leave but he grabbed my hands.

"You're not going anywhere until we clean all those cuts," Jake said in a fatherly tone.

"It isn't even my blood, it's Tessa's," I said shaking loose from his grip. Tears started forming in my eyes now that the adrenaline and fury of killing Julie were over. I collapsed to the ground crying.

"Hey, it was always going to happen okay?" Jake said softly kneeling down to look at me.

"Yeah, but I killed her" I whimpered, "I was the one who stabbed the knife into her stomach and watched her die without interfering.

"You did it to protect yourself, just like the way I left Brian to protect myself," Jake said soothingly rubbing my bloodstained back gently. "You'll be fine Alice" he added.

I wrapped my arms around his neck and buried my face in his shoulder. This was the Jake I knew. For a moment it was just the two of us. There wasn't the death of Alice Snow's best friend Tessa Graystone, or the horrific idea of Brian Anderson out there hunting for us. It was just the two friends, Jake Anderson and Alice Snow.
