Jake and I had traveled halfway across the arena before we settled in for the night.
"So its just you, me, and Brian now right?" I asked while biting into the rabbit Jake had caught.
"Yep, but believe me even with the two of us, I'm not sure we can take him down" Jake mumbled.
"It'll be fine, we got this," I said confidently placing my hand on his as if to channel power to him. Jake nodded but continued to stare at the ground.
"Tomorrow," he said firmly, "It ends tomorrow". I nodded in agreement.
Just after our conversation, the anthem rang clear through the air and the capitol seal was displayed in the sky. The faces of Julie and Thomas lit up the sky. Tessa's smile was shy while Julie's was cunning and almost wicked. I should've known not to trust her if I had just paid the slightest attention to her before. If I hadn't accepted her, Tessa might've still been here.
What good is that? The sooner she's gone the better anyways I thought. The anthem ended and the screen disappeared leaving me staring at the millions of twinkling bright stars scattered across the deep blue sky.
"Hey, you okay?" Jake asked cautiously.
"Yeah" I whispered, "I just really really miss her". Jake stared at me.
"Tessa" I answered, "Definitely not Julie. I'm glad that traitor is long dead, I hope she's currently rotting in hell where she belongs" I said defiantly, a burst of anger and energy coming from the very thought of Julie Thomas.
But where exactly would you go? a small voice said in my head. There was plenty of sins that I had committed, and I wasn't ready to accept that I would take my place right beside Julie in purgatory. No. I'm better than her. At least, that was what I wished.
"I understand how close you were, I mean, Rebecca was the pretty darn cruel to me yet even I miss her jerkish smile a bit. I can't imagine what you're going through right now" Jake said sympathetically, his eyes matched his words of sorrow.
I shrugged it off, "This is the Capitol Games Jake, death is nothing but typical. I'm going to get over it... after a while, I hope" I said staring at my feet.
"Try to get some rest Alice, tomorrow is going to be a very long day of tracking Brian. You need some beauty rest" he said rolling out his sleeping bag for me.
"Wait where are you going to sleep?" I asked as no second sleeping bag was spotted.
"The snow makes a pretty good mattress if you ask me" he joked.
"No way am I taking your sleeping bag. I'll be up in the trees alright? See you tomorrow Jake" I insisted.
He shrugged, "If you insist, I wouldn't mind the warm blankets," he said with an impish smile.
I grinned and climbed up the nearest evergreen tree, the snow covering all traces of my appearance. "Goodnight Jake," I said hoping it was loud enough for him to hear.
"Night Alice" he mumbled back, barely audible.
I sighed settling into the branch and wrapping myself in my plastic wrap. It had been 2 weeks and 4 days since the arena had started, that's long enough for the rebels to enjoy. It was time to end the Capitol Games.
