11.
I was standing in the large, white room listening to Danny how my reactions connected to my arm. Austin was in the corner, watching us. I wasn't as sore today as I had been, the pill Austin gave me must have helped.
"Your arm will not be as strong right now as it will get. That's why we are doing this training, each day your arm will be able to create stronger powers. This test will deal with how you react to things. The reactions trigger your arm to do something to protect you. When you learn how to control your emotions you can make your arm do anything you want by feeling a certain emotion. Got it?" Danny starred at me, making sure I was listening to the whole thing.
"Yep." I didn't understand entirely what he had said but I got most of it.
"Alright. Follow me."
He led me to another door in the wall that I hadn't ever seen. I looked closer at the wall. All the way around the room there were doors. More than I could count, spaced about 3 feet apart. They blended in with the walls almost perfectly, that's why I hadn't seen them before. Did the doors represent the number of tests I had to go through?
My attention was called back to Danny as he pushed a button and the door slid open. Inside there was nothing, just a small space that could hold 1 person.
"I have to go in there?!?"
"Yes, it will create memories from your past that will cause reactions and feelings within you, they will activate your arm which will help protect you against your memories. There are five memories that will each go on for two minutes. All you have to do it stand up in there," he motioned to inside the door, "I will close the door and your memories will start. I can't see your memories but I can see your reactions to them and how your arm protects you from them."
"Alright." I stepped into the little space as Danny slid the door shut. Just before it was fully closes I saw Austin's eyes starring into mine.
In complete darkness I felt around the room, there were some divets in the wall and what felt like some charcoal under my feet. These walls had been burned and thrashed at. What had happened in here? Did my arm really possess enough power to create fire? I didn't have too long to think about that as my first memory flashed into my head.
I was seven. It was the middle of the school year and I was in the lunchroom talking to my old friend Evie. Evie and I were as close as friends could get. We knew everything about each other. But she moved schools the next year and our connection was lost as soon as she met knew people and forgot about me.
"Desi! Hurry look over here don't let him see you looking at him!!!!" Evie frantically grabbed my shoulders and turned me away from the boy she liked.
"Omg! He's coming over here! What should I do!?!?" With widened eyes Evie started to stuff food into her mouth and look busy.
"Hey Desi, Hey Evie." Robert, the boy, waved shyly at us.
Evie's face turned tomato red as she tried to swallow the food and get a response out. I laughed and warmth made its way through my body. I forgot that this wasn't real for a few minutes. I forgot that it all wasn't real until Robert turned and punched Evie to the ground.
I jumped out of my seat and watched as Robert punched Evie over and over.
I didn't know I was screaming for help and crying until the salty tears reached my mouth. When I looked around no one was there. Only the floor, the ceiling, Robert, Evie and me.
