"No, I'm not letting you go!" he said as he picked up his jacket, Put on his badge, opened the door and left.
It was still 8 in the morning when he arrived to his office at the police station. He asked a young officer to check if the Chief is available. Not a long after, the young officer came back telling him he has access after 10 minutes. And so he did, 10 minutes later he stood in front of the Chief's door. Taking a deep breath, he knocked the door. When he heard on the other side "Come in" , he knew it was decided, he's here and this is going to happen, no matter what.
And so he entered.
"Good morning, Sir" he bowed politely.
"Morning Lay, have a seat." The Chief replied standing up walking towards his mini buffet pouring hot coffee in two mugs.
"Here, you know, I only act as a father around you, Lay." He smiled at Lay while the latter gave him a sweet smile with all the gratefulness in the world.
Sipping the coffee, The Chief looked at Lay, "What is it? What's wrong?"
Lay looked back at him, "There's a girl, and I do really cherish her existence in my life." before he was able to continue, The Chief interrupted him, "In simple words, you love her, Lay." He smiled at him, "It's okay, feel free to talk. On the other hand, not a lot of Chiefs offer the officers coffee, you know."
"Yes, Sir"
"So?"
"The main residence, they want to break us apart."
"Why would they want that? They go after reasons, you do know that. Have you heared why?"
"She's the chairman's daughter."
"The chairman's?"
"Yes" This time Lay looked at his feet.
"Like in the Chairman wer'e after for the past few months?" That went with a little higher tone.
"Sir, I didn't know she was related to him. She didn't know. He's her biological father. She actually never lived with him, he visited her like once a year till a young age then he disappeared and came back a few years ago, since then he's been trying to contact her but she refuses with all her might." Lay sighed deeply, worriedly, and softened his tone, "Sir, I do really love her."
"Can you make her turn him in?"
"What?"
"Can. You. Make. Her. Turn. Him. In?" The Chief asked this time with a different tone, spelling each word loud and clear.
Lay just looked at him, balancing the words, trying to understand if it fits the situation. Then he looked at his boss,
"How can someone turn his father to the authorities even if he's a criminal, even if they hate him?" he asked feeling pity for her.
"Ask her."
"But Sir-"
"Didn't you say you love her?, you choose now, Lay. It's up to you. Either you ask her, or you give up everything you've ever worked for in your entire life. And I would be glad if it only stops at that extent, with you taking her and just leave. But we both know it won't end like that. It's your Call Lay"
Lay stood up, "I'll take my leave now, and thank you, Sir." he bowed politely and left.
Back to his office he sat down and leaned his head back, he released a deep sigh and closed his eyes then reached to his pocket picking up his phone, he opened his eyes and unlocked it.
"Morning sweetheart, when you wake up text me back. I already miss you <3<3" . Lay texted her when he heared chuckling at the door, "I don't think you miss me more than I do" There, she's standing right before his eyes, smiling at him.
He Stood up, approached her and throw his heavy arms on her shoulders like a baby clutching onto his mother.
"Let's have breakfast together" he said taking her hand, she gently shook it away and offered him a bag, "How thoughtful of me!"
He looked at her with a hint of determination in his eyes, then he walked towards the door, opened it and seemed to tell an officer something, then he closed the door, came back and sat next to her. He looked at her nicely, yet seriously, "Hey, want to run away with me?"..
"What? What's going on?" she asked not understanding anything.
After he explained to her the whole situation, they sat there speechless. Then she looked at him, "Then, it's either I turn him in or you lose your job?" she asked and he nodded.
"No, Lay. That's not right, there must be another way!" she said and he could sense the fear that captured her heart. He needed to assure her, "It's going to be just fine." he smiled at her and touched her face with his fingers, "And it's for our own good, we'll get to spend more time together."
As he kept watching her, a tear escaped her eyes. He kneeled down in front of her, "I want to do this. I'm sick of people ordering me what to do and what to not. And I don't get to see you for days. This is just too much for nothing." he said.
She put her hand on his cheek, "But this is all what you ever wanted." she said.
He shook his head and put his hand in his pocket, "This is what I really want." and he pulled a blue small box.
Her eyes couldn't stop crying, it started raining in there.
"Your tears are precious" he wiped them away, "You're my everything, you're my Sun and my Ocean. Furthermore, my refuge. You're going to be a wonderful mother. I trust no one to carry my name and my child. You're saying my job?.. I say my life!"
He put his left arm behind his back and bowed slightly opening the box, he added, "I love you with every drop of blood rushes into my veins. With every pulse my heart pumps to my soul. It's you whom I want to wake up to every morning, and the last face to see before I drift to sleep."
He sighed nervously, "Will you give me the honor and be my wife?" he finally asked.
She looked at him and cried, then lifted his chin with her fingers, "Yes."
They both cuddled and smiled.. Maybe tears were involved but not all tears refers to a bad thing.
He knows this is not the end, a beginning indeed. Just as his boss said, and just as he suggested. Of course Lay understood there was a message behind the Chief's words, "It's your call, Lay" Now that he's been too close to the Chief, of course they had codes. The Chief wanted him to runaway, there's not a single word he said that didn't confirm that.
He's fully aware, they will be after them, but he wouldn't just let her go, he'll protect her with all that he has, till he gives his last breaths away. And even if he's gone, she won't be left alone in this world unprotected. He has everything ready and yet preparing the rest.
Willingly, lovingly he just dedicated his life to his love.
Loving her.. Protecting her.. And never letting her go..
